You can customize how coaching events are handled in the Safety Inbox and Coaching workflows using Coaching and Inbox settings. These settings define how events are assigned to coaches, reviewed by drivers, and dismissed once they have been resolved.
Coaching settings determine how safety events are assigned, reviewed, and managed through coaching workflows (Settings ( ) > Fleet > Safety > Coaching). These settings—summarized in the following table—define how coaches, drivers, and automated rules interact during the review and coaching process.

Setting |
Description and Behavior |
|---|---|
|
Coaching Program |
Displays configured coaching automations that define how safety events are evaluated and handled—such as sending lower-priority events to drivers for self-review and routing higher-priority events to managers for coaching. When an automation is enabled, its rules determine event handling for all applicable cases. Automated workflows take precedence over any configured Coach Assignment settings. |
|
Coach Assignment |
Controls how coaches are assigned to events and sessions. Coach Assignment assigns the most recent coach linked to the driver or tag when an event is sent to coaching. If this option is disabled, an administrator selects a coach manually from the Safety Inbox or during session creation. If no coach is selected, the session remains Unassigned until a coach completes it, at which point that coach becomes the assigned coach. |
|
Allows drivers to review and acknowledge safety events in the Samsara Driver App or Portal. Administrators can choose whether drivers can mark events as Coached or if a manager must complete a coaching session. |
|
|
Assigned Coach Email Notifications |
Sends an email notification to the assigned coach when a harsh event or other event requiring coaching occurs. Notifications are sent automatically using the organization’s default email settings. |
|
Voice Coaching |
Configures in-cab audio alerts for unsafe driving behaviors detected by CM-series dash cams. When configured, these settings also apply to Nudges. |
|
Coaching Due Date |
Defines the number of days coaches have to complete a session after an event is assigned. The default is 14 days, but administrators can adjust the timeframe. Sessions that pass the due date are marked as late in the Coaching Timeliness Report. |
Inbox settings control how events are managed in the Safety Inbox (Settings ( ) > Fleet > Safety > Inbox). These settings—summarized in the following table—define how events are dismissed and whether a dismissal reason is required or applied automatically based on automation rules.
|
Setting |
Description and Behavior |
|---|---|
|
Require Dismissal Reason |
Requires coaches to select or enter a reason when marking an event as Dismissed. The reason is recorded in the event’s Internal Comments tab and Activity Log and is included in Safety Event exports. |
|
Automatically dismiss Safety Events |
Automatically dismisses Safety Events that occur during verified emergency responses. When Emergency Lights or Emergency Sirens auxiliary inputs are active, events meeting the selected dismissal condition are removed from the active Safety Inbox, tagged with an Emergency Response context label, and displayed in the Dismissed tab with a reason code of Emergency Response. |
