After you connect an auxiliary input to a compatible device, such as a powered AG or VG, you can configure the type from the Samsara dashboard.
Use the following workflow to configure the auxiliary inputs for your asset:
-
On the Dashboard Overview, select the asset for which you connected an auxiliary input.
-
From the more actions ( ••• ) menu, select Settings.
-
In the Aux Input list, click + Add Aux Input.
-
Select the name for any Aux Input Type in use.
For detailed information on input types and additional configuration instructions, including auxiliary engine and ATIS lamp configurations, see Configurable Auxiliary Input Types.
If the type doesn't fit into predefined categories, consider defining a custom AUX input type. Otherwise, you can choose Other.
-
Select the Input Number that corresponds to the input assignment.
-
(Optional) To reverse the input polarity in the Samsara dashboard, select Invert signal.
Note
You can not invert the signals for the following input types: Panic Button, Privacy Button, Secondary Fuel Source and Equipment Activity.
Reversing the input allows you to customize what the system considers On activity. This ensures the dashboard and reports match the actual operation of the connected device (for example, if a material spreader outputs a low signal while spreading, enabling inversion displays On during spreading instead of Off).
When the engine is off, inverted ports always emit low signals, regardless of the actual input. This behavior applies only to vehicles; it does not affect equipment, trailers, or other asset types.
-
Save the asset settings.
After you save the settings, you can view the status of the input in the
Diagnosticssection of asset details and on the asset coverage map.
After configuring an auxiliary input, the diagnostic details display in the Coverage Map of Auxiliary Input Activity and historical diagnostics. The following table summarizes the diagnostic data shown in the asset overview for each input type.

If the predefined AUX input types do not meet your needs, you can define a custom AUX input type to better align with your operational requirements. In addition to specifying a custom label, you can also configure Continuity settings for how the input displays on the Coverage Map.
To create a new custom AUX input type, use the following workflow:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
In Devices, click Configuration > Gateways.
-
In the AUX inputs section, Add AUX Input Type.
-
Define the AUX input label name and configure Continuity:
-
Enter a unique name for the input.
-
Set the Continuity (Point or Continuous) to control how the signal displays on the coverage map.
-
Point displays each activation as a discrete dot.
-
Continuous displays a line from activation to deactivation, showing the full signal duration.
-
-
-
Save and Apply the configuration.
You can now use the custom AUX input type on any gateway.
