To decrease the number of safety events that require coaching and reduce the need for in-person coaching, in-cab Nudges provide drivers with an opportunity to self-correct their behavior in the moment before their safety scores are impacted.
Note
Nudges are most effective if your fleet has a consistent source of driver assignment in the Samsara platform, such as Camera ID or Samsara Driver App assignments. If your percentage of trips with a driver assigned is below 80%, you will receive a warning in the Samsara dashboard when you enable the feature. You can also enable the Show Nudge Events Without Assigned Drivers setting).
You can configure Nudges for the following AI Event Detection events:
-
Following Distance (Tailgating) Detection: Detects tailgating behavior where a driver is following another vehicle too closely.
-
Lane Departure Warning: Detects when the vehicle crosses a solid yellow or white line.
-
Inattentive Driving: Detects distractions such as eating, drinking, talking to passengers, or fiddling with the stereo while operating the vehicle.
-
Mobile Usage: Detects when a driver is using a mobile phone.
-
No Seat Belt Detection: Checks for a seat belt firmly strapped across the driver's body.
When Nudges are enabled, drivers receive audible in-cab alerts when a safety behavior is detected. If the driver does not correct the behavior, Nudges repeat until the configured threshold is reached.
When the behavior meets the threshold during the configured reset period, the behavior is escalated to the Safety Inbox. For behavior types that have Nudges enabled, if alert notifications are configured, drivers will not receive a notification for an event until the Nudges threshold has been met. After the threshold is met, drivers will receive an alert notification for each safety event that is promoted from a Nudge.
To provide full visibility into the driver behaviors that triggered escalation, all safety events within the selected reset period—both before and after the threshold is reached—are uploaded to the Safety Inbox by default. When Limit Nudge Event Upload is enabled during Nudges configuration, you can upload only the final event that meets the Nudge threshold; earlier events from the same reset period are excluded.
Note
When the reset period for a detection is set to operate on a per-trip basis, the usual cap of one event per trip is ignored if you disable nudge limits. If an additional event occurs after reaching the threshold, the cap filter will prevent it from being counted as a Nudge, so no further alerts will be generated for that trip. This ensures that alerts reflect the configured threshold while avoiding unnecessary notifications beyond the cap.
Before the safety event impacts the safety score and displays in safety reports, the following conditions must be met:
-
A driver is assigned to the vehicle.
Note
For organizations created after October 1, 2024, unassigned safety events will automatically bypass the Nudges threshold and show in the Safety Inbox. For organizations created prior to October 1, 2024, unassigned safety events will not escalate to the Safety Inbox unless the Show Nudge Events Without Assigned Drivers setting is enabled.
-
The driver repeats the behavior within a rolling reset period (either 12 hours or per trip).
-
The driver meets or exceeds the configured Nudges threshold.
-
Using advanced logic, Samsara determines that the event is not a false positive.
You can configure Nudges as part of your AI Event Detection settings to provide in-cab audio alerts when unsafe driving behaviors are detected. When Nudges are enabled for an event type, the Voice Coaching settings for audio type and language are applied to Nudges.
You can configure Nudges for your entire fleet or on a per-vehicle basis. Use the following workflow to configure Nudges for your fleet:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Within your Fleet settings, click Safety > Event Detection.
-
For each detection method you enable, configure your detection preferences for audio alerts and Nudges.
When you enable Nudges, you also define the number of Nudges that trigger a coaching event and the reset period. The reset period is either 12 hours (default) or per trip.
-
Configure Nudges preferences:
-
(Organizations created prior to October 1, 2024 only) Enable the Show Nudge Events Without Assigned Drivers setting to ensure unassigned events are included in the Safety Inbox. This is the default behavior for organizations created October 1, 2024 and later.
-
By default, all events within the reset period are uploaded when the threshold is reached. Enable Limit Nudge Event Upload to limit uploads to only the final event that hit the threshold.
-
-
Save your changes.
-
To review events with Nudges, see the In-Cab Nudges™ (Alerts) Report.
If desired, use the following workflow to apply the Nudges setting to one or a subset of vehicles:
-
Ensure In-Cab Audio Alerts for AI-Detected Audio Alerts is enabled for the vehicle.
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From Fleet settings, select Safety.
-
From the top of Safety Settings, select Edit Individual Vehicles.
-
Select the vehicle to modify the vehicle settings. To edit the settings of an individual vehicle, select Edit. To edit one or more vehicles, select the vehicles you want to edit and click Edit Vehicles.
-
Configure Nudges for the vehicle (Enabled, Disabled, Default to Organization Setting (ON/OFF)).
When enabled, if the organization setting is ON, the threshold assumes the configured organization threshold. If the organization setting is OFF, the threshold is the default setting of two in-cab alerts per 12 hours.
-
Submit to confirm the settings.
