To decrease the number of safety events that require coaching and reduce the need for in-person coaching, in-cab Nudges provide drivers with an opportunity to self-correct their behavior in the moment before their safety scores are impacted.
Note
Nudges are most effective if your fleet has a consistent source of driver assignment in the Samsara platform, such as Camera ID or Samsara Driver App assignments. If your percentage of trips with a driver assigned is below 80%, you will receive a warning in the Samsara dashboard when you enable the feature.
You can configure Nudges for the following AI Event Detection events:
-
Distracted Driving Detection (includes Mobile Usage detection and Inattentive Driving)
-
Following Distance (Tailgating) Detection for following distance
After you Enable and Configure Nudges for Your Fleet, drivers receive an audible in-cab nudge when a safety behavior is detected. If the behavior is not corrected, the Nudges repeat until the Nudges threshold is reached. When the behavior meets the threshold, the behavior is escalated to the Safety Inbox.
For behavior types that have Nudges enabled, if alert notifications is configured, drivers will not receive a notification for an event until the Nudges threshold has been met in 12 hours. After the threshold is met, drivers will receive an alert notification for each safety event that is promoted from a Nudge.
Before the safety event impacts the safety score and displays in safety reports, the following conditions must be met:
-
A driver is assigned to the vehicle.
Note
To display in the Nudges report or to escalate Nudges as a safety event, a driver must be assigned to the vehicle. Unassigned events do not display in safety reports.
-
The driver repeats the behavior within a rolling 12-hour period.
-
The driver meets or exceeds the configured Nudges threshold.
-
Using advanced logic, Samsara determines that the event is not a false positive.
To enable and configure Nudges, you must configure the setting for each AI event detection setting. Use the following workflow to enable and configure Nudges for your fleet or to enable Nudges for an individual vehicles, see Enable Nudges for an Individual Vehicle.
-
Select the Settings icon () at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Within your Fleet settings, click Safety > Event Detection.
-
Locate the detection setting from AI Event Detection. Enable the setting and In-cab audio alerts, if necessary. For more information about the detection, reference the AI detection topic:

-
-
Enable Nudges within the AI Event Detection setting.
-
Configure the Nudges escalation threshold (2 (default), 3, or 4 in-cab nudges per 12 hours).
-
Save the setting.
-
To review events with Nudges, see the In-Cab Nudges™ (Alerts) Report.
If desired, use the following workflow to apply the Nudges setting to one or a subset of vehicles:

-
Submit to confirm the settings.
