Dual and front-facing cameras with AI capabilities can detect unsafe following distance, often referred to as tailgating. Following Distance detection helps you improve driver safety by sending optional in-cab alerts to encourage drivers to increase following distance. Dash cams use a combination of AI-powered distance estimation and current speed data to detect unsafe following behavior in real-time.
Each unsafe Following Distance Detection impacts the driver Safety Scores and triggers a safety event upload to the Safety Inbox with footage of shortly before and after the alert trigger.
Tailgating events can occur frequently. To avoid excessive Safety Inbox events, Following Distance events are limited to five event uploads per device per hour and a maximum of 10 event uploads per device per day.
To get started with Following Distance Detection, review the following workflows to optimize its use and customize it for your fleet:
-
Review Event Detection Best Practices: For the most accurate AI Event Detection, review the AI Event Detection recommendations and best practices.
-
Customize Event Detection: By default, a Following Distance safety event is triggered at speeds over 55 mph when the following distance is less than 0.5 seconds for at least 30 seconds, and in-cab audio alerts are disabled. To customize these settings for your fleet, see Configure Following Distance Detection.
-
Set Alerts: In addition to in-cab audio alerts for drivers, you can also configure an alert to receive an email notification or an SMS when an unsafe Following Distance event occurs.
By default, in-cab audio alerts are disabled. A Following Distance safety event is generated when the vehicle exceeds 55 mph and maintains a following distance of less than 0.5 seconds for at least 30 seconds.
To configure settings to selected vehicles, see Safety Settings for Individual Vehicles or use the following workflow to configure settings to all vehicles in your fleet:
-
Before you enable Following Distance Detection, review the recommendations for AI Event Detection and Configure AI Event Detection.
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From Fleet, select Safety > AI Event Detection.
-
Locate Following Distance Detection.
-
Configure the Following Distance Detection settings:
-
In-cab audio alerts: Choose
ON
to play in-cab audio alerts when Samsara detects an unsafe following distance. By default, in-cab audio alerts areOFF
. -
Speed Threshold: Set the speed at which an in-cab alert triggers and a Safety Inbox event uploads (35 mph, 45 mph, or 55 mph (default)). Increasing the speed threshold reduces the number of events, while decreasing the threshold increases it. Samsara uploads up to 5 events per hour per driver to the Safety Inbox.
-
Duration: Specify the length of time the dash cam must detect unsafe driving behavior before reporting an Unsafe Following Distance event (15 seconds, 30 seconds (default), or 60 seconds).
-
Distance Seconds: Set the vehicle following distance, measured in seconds from the object (< 0.5 seconds (default), < 1.0 seconds, < 1.5 seconds).
-
-
Save to confirm the setting.
