Note
By using this feature, you are confirming that you have read the Driver Safety Features Disclaimer.
To encourage safe driving behaviors, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) detection uses extensive crash data to predict forward collisions and to provide drivers with a real-time in-cab audio alert of a potential impact.
Automatically-detected events are included in reports and affect the driver safety score. Additionally, these events also trigger an upload of a ten second video of road-facing dash cam footage to the Safety Inbox for review and coaching.
The Forward Collision Warning triggers only when the following are true:
-
Vehicle speeds are greater than 25 mph
-
Event occurs during daytime hours: FCW Detection is disabled at night
Common known false triggers include: vehicles changing lanes, oncoming vehicles in the opposite lane, reflections/rain on the windshield, and active windshield wipers.
FCW detections do not include high-speed impacts, such as head-on collisions, or collisions from the side or rear of the vehicle.
To get started with Forward Collision Warning detection, review the following workflows to optimize its use and customize it for your fleet:
-
Review Event Detection Best Practices: For the most accurate AI Event Detection, review the AI Event Detection recommendations and best practices.
-
Enable In-cab Alerts: By default, in-cab audio alerts are disabled. When you enable in-cab audio alerts, drivers are alerted up to 2 seconds before a collision. To enable in-cab audio alerts, see Configure In-cab Audio Alerts for Forward Collision Warning.
-
Set Alerts: In addition to in-cab audio alerts for drivers, you can also configure an alert to receive an email notification or an SMS when a Forward Collision Warning event occurs.
To configure settings to selected vehicles, see Safety Settings for Individual Vehicles or use the following workflow to configure settings to all vehicles in your fleet:
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From Fleet settings, go to Safety > Event Detection, locate the AI Event Detection settings and enable Forward Collision Warning.
-
Configure the In-cab audio alerts: Choose
ON
to play in-cab audio alerts when Samsara detects an imminent forward collision. By default, in-cab audio alerts areOFF
.When you enable audio alerts, the in-cab alert type (tone or voice-coaching) reflects the fleet-level Voice Coaching configuration.
-
Save your changes.
