To stay informed on fleet activity, create alerts for the events that matter most to you and your administrators. To minimize alert fatigue, consider a narrow scope where you alert contacts in a need-to-know and requires-immediate-action approach.
To manage workflows you must have a Full Admin role or custom role with the following Alerts permissions as needed:
For more information on permissions, see Administrative Access and Permissions.
There are two versions of Samsara alerts: v 1.0 and v 2.0. The workflows to configure alerts for both versions are similar but have slight differences. Refer to Alert Triggers to learn more about all alert types and the following topics on how to create alerts for each version:
-
Select the Alerts ( ).
-
+ Create Alert.
-
Select a trigger for which you want to create an alert. If desired, use the Search to narrow the list of triggers.
-
Enter a descriptive name for your alert configuration.
-
Define the trigger settings:
-
Define the condition under which you want to raise an alert.
The specifications for each trigger differ based on the trigger type:
-
Event-based: An event occurred (for example, a DVIR is submitted or a gateway is unplugged)
-
State-based: An asset is in a particular state (for example, a gateway is disconnected)
-
Metric-based: A metric crossed a user-defined threshold (for example, the vehicle speed is above 70 mph). For metric-based triggers, you must also define the threshold. For example, for the Speed Above Limit trigger, you specify the speed threshold.
-
-
Define the minimum duration (seconds, minutes, or hours) for which the condition must hold to trigger an alert.
For all state-based and metric-based triggers, you can configure the duration between 0 to 3 days. Duration is not available for event-based triggers since they occur once.
-
Specify the source for the trigger: a selection of specific objects, a group of objects (identified using Tags), or all objects.
For example, you can apply the alert configuration to specific groups of vehicles or drivers.
-
(Optional) Limit the alert configuration by additional criteria (choose one).
-
Add Geofence: Trigger an alert only when the vehicle or asset is inside or outside a geofence location.
-
Add Engine On/Off: Trigger an alert only for specific engine states.
-
-
(Optional) Specify the time range during which the alert notification is relevant.
By default, an alert configuration is always active. If you want the alert to trigger only during a specific time range select Edit.
The configuration can be Active between when Samsara only sends notifications when conditions trigger during specified days and time period, or Inactive between when Samsara only sends notifications when conditions trigger outside a specific time range.
-
-
Choose how you want to notify recipients when the trigger conditions are met.
You can send an alert over email, push notification, or text message to one or more recipients. If configured for text, review the SMS Terms and Conditions for Alerts. The Samsara Fleet App is required for push notifications. By default, notifications are sent over both email and text if both an email address and phone number are provided. If you are signed out of the Samsara Fleet App when an alert triggers, you will receive an email notification by default. We recommend you obtain consent from your recipients before selecting them to receive alert text, email, or push notifications.
A recipient can be any of the following:
-
Individual users defined in the Samsara dashboard.
-
Users assigned a built-in role or custom role in the Samsara dashboard.
-
Additional contacts that don't log in to the Samsara dashboard that you add for notification purposes only (for example drivers, contractors, or customers).
Recipients can receive alerts based on their associated tags. For example, an administrator has reduced dashboard access with a tag called EastCoast, so that user would receive alerts only for objects (assets, geofences, drivers) assigned to the Eastcoast tag.
If an administrator has multiple levels of dashboard access through tags, or is assigned to multiple roles with different levels of access, the highest level of dashboard access is respected. For example, if a recipient has the role of Branch Manager (with access to only their region), as well as a Full Admin role (which has access to the entire organization), the recipient will receive alerts related to the Full Admin role.
If you need to remove a contact, select the x to the right of the notification method icons.
Note
If more than 30 users are eligible to receive notifications when an event is triggered, Samsara chooses the recipients at random. Only users with tag access to the entity triggering the alert will be notified. For example, if a vehicle speeding incident is triggered, and 45 users could be notified based on their tag access, only 30 will actually receive the notification. Notifications are also evaluated individually such that multiple notification methods for one user do not double count against the limit.
-
-
You can also add additional notification actions for any of the following methods:
-
Webhook notifications: Use a Webhook configuration to send notifications to a server. To set up Webhook notifications, click Add Action > Send Webhook and choose an existing Webhook configuration to which you want to send notifications or click Manage to set up or modify a Webhook integration.
Note
Webhook notifications are available only for some customers and support specific individual alert conditions such as when a driver is speeding. Webhooks do not support multi-condition alerts such as when a driver is speeding AND within a specific geofence. Contact your Samsara account representative for more details.
As you configure an alert, you can choose the 1.0 Legacy or 2.0 Webhook payload option depending on the trigger.
-
Slack notifications: Display notifications in an existing Slack channel. To set up Slack notifications, click Add Action > Send Slack Notification and choose an existing Slack integration to which you want to send notifications or click Manage to set up or modify a Slack integration.
-
Notify Driver: Use push notifications to alert drivers that use the Samsara Driver App. Each driver push notification displays in the notification center, opens the Samsara Driver App when tapped, and communicates text that is configured within the Alerts v 2.0 trigger. Only some alert triggers support driver push notifications. To set up alerts to drivers, select Add Action > Notify Driver and choose your notification types:
-
Display: Showcases a push notification for the driver.
The Push notification and full screen alert option sends a full screen alert if the Samsara Driver App is open on the driver's mobile device, and sends a push notification when the app is running in the background only.
The Push notification only option sends a push notification when the app is open or in the background.
The Full screen alert only option sends a full screen only when the app is open.
-
Sound: Audibly alerts drivers with a notification ding sound, followed by audio dictation of the alert title.
If there are multiple notifications, the alerts are dictated as they appear sequentially in the Samsara Driver App.
To use the Notify Driver sound feature, drivers must have Samsara Driver App version 2330.300 or later, and sound must be enabled on the drivers' mobile device to play the notification.
-
Custom Text: Includes customized text to appear below the alert title and alert-specific subtext.
Custom text only appears if you select a Display option that includes a full screen alert. The maximum length for text is 64 characters.
-
-
Dashboard banner: For some v 2.0 alerts, such as the Panic Button alert, a banner notification will display in the Fleet Overview page at the top of the asset list. The banner displays automatically for certain alert types and is in addition to any notification options selected in this configuration.
-
Assign Form: Notify workers and drivers of a triggered form assignment in the Samsara Driver App. When the driver taps the notification, it takes them to their Samsara Driver App Inbox, where they can tap on the task to take them directly to the assigned form. Only some alert triggers support Assign Form notifications. To set up alerts to workers and drivers, select Add Action > Assign Form and complete the Form Template, Assign to, and Due after fields.
The Due after timer begins immediately after notification. For example, if a geofence entry with an Assign Form action is triggered at 9:00 AM, and the Due after is 1 hour, the due date will be 10:00 AM the same day, an hour after notification receipt. Forms completed after the Due after limit are considered Past Due.
To remove an action, hover over the action and click the trash ( ) icon.
-
-
Save the alert configuration.
-
After you save your configuration you can return to the Alerts > Configured Alerts page at any time to enable, disable, or delete the configuration.
You can also review specific incidents on the Alerts > Alerts Incidents page. See View Alert Incidents.
Note
Each alert supports a max of 4000 devices.
-
Select Alerts ( ).
-
Select Create Alert.
-
Select a trigger for which you want to create an alert. If desired, use the Search to narrow the list of triggers.
-
Configure the settings for the alert.
Settings vary by alert type, but typically include the conditions under which Samsara should send the alert and the specific devices for which you are configuring the alert. In addition, your alert configuration can include:
-
Alert Schedule: Designate time range and days of the week during which you want to Enable or Disable notifications. Click + Add range to assign multiple schedule configurations.
-
Send Alert To: Choose one or more contacts in your address book to whom you want to send the alert. You can also add New or Manage existing contacts. For more information on adding alert contacts, see Manage Alert Contacts.
The contacts that appear in the contact book are a mix of manual entries and user accounts that have access privileges to view the type of alert. Manual entries are identified by an address book icon and user accounts that have access are identified by a circular profile image (or a randomized color and first initial, if no profile picture is provided).
-
Send Webhook Notifications: If you use Webhooks to send notifications for Samsara events to external servers, you can set the Webhook you want to use as a recipient for notifications. Click Manage to set up a new integration.
-
Send Slack Notifications: If you set up Slack to post a message when there is an alert, you can choose the Slack integration you want to use. Click Manage to set up a new integration.
-
Description: Enter an optional description that identifies or describes the purpose or scope of the alert.
-
-
Save the alert configuration.
-
At any time, you can return to the Alerts page to manage your alert configurations and View Alert Incidents.
