Tip
Fleets have the best overall experience when they build on the Samsara Network by using Vehicle Gateways and powered Asset Gateways to cover vehicles and equipment that routinely travel near tagged assets, and wall-powered gateways (for example AG53) to cover yards or shops where assets sit stationary.

To get started, activate your Asset Tag with the Samsara Fleet App (recommended) or by going to the activation page at the regional Samsara cloud URL assigned to your organization (such as cloud.samsara.com/activate, cloud.ca.samsara.com/activate, or cloud.eu.samsara.com/activate).
When you first add a device, Samsara identifies it by its serial number. To simplify management, rename the device with the asset name and add an asset photo. This helps you associate the Asset Tag with its attached asset, improves visibility in the dashboard, and enables features such as AI-powered categorization and estimated replacement value. Adding both an asset name and photo ensures the device appears as fully installed on the Asset Tag overview page.
-
Review Asset Tag Placement Best Practices to determine the best mounting location and installation method.
-
Mount the Asset Tag.
-
Loop fastener
Secure the Asset Tag through the corner loop with a key ring, zip-tie, or wire loop attached to rings, hoops, or similar tie-down points on the asset.
-
Adhesive mount
-
Clean and dry the bonding area with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
-
Apply the supplied VHB adhesive or epoxy on the bottom face for permanent attachment, or use the adhesive to hold the device in place while you add a mechanical method (for example a zip-tie through the corner loop).
If using epoxy, follow the epoxy cure time and use guidance.

-
Confirm the installation in the Samsara dashboard.
Open the Reports > Asset Tag Overview and verify the device is active.
The Asset Tag location can take up to 5 minutes to display after the tag wirelessly communicates with Samsara's network of gateways. Asset Tag locations are approximate (gateway position and signal strength); expect a radius of uncertainty around the map marker.

For ongoing use and configuration of your asset tags, proceed to Manage Your Asset Tags.
For ongoing use and configuration of your Asset Tags, see:
-
Edit the device or associated asset settings: Asset Tag (AT) Device Settings
-
Track your asset:
-
Create location and movement alerts to receive notifications when an Asset Tag enters or exists a geofenced area. Because Asset Tag locations are approximate, set a larger geofence size or configure a duration for the alert to ensure optimal performance and reduce false positives for alerts.
