Where you mount an Asset Tag affects detection range, location accuracy, and how well the tag stays on the asset. Choose a location with line of sight to open air when possible and a discreet spot that reduces theft risk.
When you conceal a tag inside an enclosure, plastic surfaces generally preserve more range than aluminum, and aluminum preserves more range than steel. Test placement in the intended environment when you can, especially in yards or job sites with sparse gateway coverage.
Detection rate and location accuracy depend on Samsara network density in the area where the Asset Tag operates. When possible, test the device in the desired location before you rely on it for critical workflows.
Position both the Asset Tag and nearby gateways for maximum coverage and detection. For the best location accuracy and geofence alert responsiveness, keep the Asset Tag within 100 yards (91 meters) of a Vehicle Gateway (VG) or Asset Gateway (AG). Use the following table to plan gateway placement:
|
Gateway and Asset Tag Placement |
Estimated Range |
Recommended Gateway |
|---|---|---|
|
Clear line of sight |
1000 ft (305 m) |
AG or VG |
|
Within an enclosure, such as within a metal van, trailer, container, or cabinet |
300 ft (91 m) |
VG |
For zip ties, screws, VHB adhesive, epoxy, and other attachment methods, follow the installation guide for your Asset Tag model:
