DVIR 2.0 is the updated version of the legacy Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs). DVIR 2.0 makes inspections faster, easier and more reliable with AI-assisted data capture to reduce manual effort, enhanced customizable templates for various vehicle types and workflows, and a centralized dashboard to simplify tracking and managing inspection quality. DVIR 2.0 also has full backwards compatibility with the legacy DVIR system.
All new organizations created on or after December 16, 2025 and organizations that have never used legacy DVIRs prior to December 16, 2025 will be automatically updated to DVIR 2.0.

Enables fleets to configure retrention settings for DVIR submissions |
|
Create DVIRs from Dashboard |
Enables admins to create DVIRs directly in the Samsara dashboard |
|
Combined Vehicle + Trailer DVIRs |
Supports submissions of one DVIR for both vehicle and its attached trailer |
To learn morn more about how to use DVIR 2.0, select a topic:
You can use Templates in Maintenance () > DVIR, to manage, create, and edit DVIR templates with granular control over inspection content and defect options.
To create a DVIR template, select + Create template in the top right corner and choose whether to start from an empty template, or build off an existing template. You can then choose what asset type the template is being created for.
You can also create and manage a standardized list of vehicle and trailer defects to use across all DVIR templates within Defects in Maintenance settings (Settings () > Fleet > Maintenance).
In Maintenance () > DVIR > Assignments is a list of your assets that you can assign DVIR templates to. After you select one or more specific vehicles and trailers, you can Assign template to ensure the right DVIR template is used.
Within Maintenance settings (Settings () > Fleet > Maintenance), you can configure the logic for missing DVIRs, enable settings to ensure DVIR quality, and create and manage asset defects to use across your DVIR templates.
The following table describes DVIR 2.0 settings you can edit:
|
Field |
Description |
|---|---|
|
General |
|
|
Prevent drivers from resolving existing DVIR defects |
Select this setting if you want only administrators to be able to resolve DVIR defects. |
|
Missing DVIR Settings |
|
|
Timeframe |
Configure how often a driver must complete a new DVIR (pre-trip or post-trip) on an assigned asset. The default time is every 12 hours. |
|
Time to complete |
Specify the grace period drivers have to complete the DVIR after a workflow assignment is triggered. Assignments not completed after this period is classified as Missing. |
|
DVIR Quality |
|
|
DVIR Duration |
If enabled, set the minimum amount of time a driver must spend completing a DVIR (for example, a minimum of 5 minutes) to ensure DVIR quality. |
|
Phone and asset location match |
If enabled, the driver's device must be 0.25 miles (0.4 kilometers) away from the assigned vehicle when submitting the DVIR. |
|
Photo quality |
If enabled, requires that DVIR photos must be taken within the last 60 minutes and also displays the correct part of the asset. |

You can set up when a driver must fill out their DVIR, such as at the start or the end of the day, through Settings () > Driver App > Workflows.
When you create a driver workflow with + Create Workflow at either the Start of Day or the End of Day, you can add the DVIR step with + Add task.
The DVIR step can be marked required (if the driver must complete the DVIR to proceed), or optional (if the driver can skip the DVIR).
You can configure additional DVIR settings to ensure the quality of submitted DVIRs in Settings () > Maintenance. For more information, see DVIR 2.0 Settings.
To view the DVIR 2.0 workflow from the driver perspective, see View or Complete a DVIR in DVIR 2.0.
You can use the Samsara dashboard to monitor compliance, prioritize defects, and resolve issues with efficiency in Defects and DVIRs within Maintenance () > DVIR.
Defects displays all unresolved minor and major defects across your fleet in one place for easier prioritization. Here, Mechanics can use + Work Order on a row to create a work order for the corresponding asset, or add an existing work order to it.
If a mechanic selects + Last DVIR on a row, they can view and Export the details of the latest DVIR submitted for the corresponding asset, and resolve defects directly by updating the resolution status of a defect (Unresolved, In Progress, or Resolved) and including an optional mechanic note with + Mechanic Notes.
After they resolve a defect, they can add a mechanic signature to previously marked unsafe DVIRs to certify the asset is now safe to operate.
DVIRs displays a consolidated list of all DVIRs submitted, as well as any missing DVIRs. You can filter the list by selecting Safe, Unsafe, and Resolved.
This view helps you to quickly surface any unresolved items, see if defects were reported, or if there are any quality issues with the submission, such as photo quality.
If you select a DVIR row, you can view the DVIR report and Export its details.
If your organization uses DVIR 2.0 alongside legacy Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs). You can choose which Samsara Driver App users have access to the new DVIR experience through Settings ( ) > Feature Management.
You can enable DVIR 2.0 for your entire organization, or for individual drivers or tags in Feature Management through DVIR 2.0: Driver Access > add specific drivers.
As best practice, drivers must upgrade to version 2542.100+ of the Samsara Driver App to ensure they get the most updated DVIR workflow experience. If your drivers are on an older version of the app, they will see two DVIR tiles, which can be confusing.
To view the DVIR 2.0 workflow from the driver perspective, see View or Complete a DVIR in DVIR 2.0.
All new organizations created on or after December 16, 2025 and organizations that have never used legacy DVIRs prior to December 16, 2025 will be automatically updated to DVIR 2.0.
If your organization used legacy DVIRs prior to December 16, 2025, you have the the option to to switch back to the legacy DVIR experience. To switch back to the legacy DVIR experience, select Defects and click Switch to legacy DVIR.
