Railroad Crossing Violation Detection identifies when a vehicle does not come to a complete stop at a railroad crossing, regardless of train presence or gate activity. This feature is designed for organizations that operate vehicles with internal policies or safety protocols requiring a full stop at railroad crossings, such as school buses and hazardous materials carriers.
The detection uses GPS and map data to determine whether the vehicle slowed below a configured speed threshold before crossing a mapped heavy rail location. If the vehicle does not slow below the threshold, an event is generated and uploaded to the Safety Inbox for review.
To manage detection in your fleet, you can configure the speed threshold and enable alerts for administrators or drivers.
This detection has the following conditions and limitations related to how events are triggered:
-
Applies only to mapped heavy rail crossings
-
Does not apply to light rail or municipal transit crossings
-
Does not require a minimum stop duration—the vehicle only needs to slow below the configured threshold to avoid detection
To get started with Railroad Crossing Violation Detection, review the following workflows to optimize its use and customize it for your fleet:
-
Review Event Detection Best Practices: For the most accurate AI Event Detection, review the AI Event Detection recommendations and best practices.
-
Customize Detection and In-Cab Alerts: By default, the speed threshold is set to 5 mph. When you configure Railroad Crossing Violation Detection, you can select a different speed threshold and enable in-cab audio alerts.
-
Set Alerts: In addition to in-cab audio alerts for drivers, you can also configure an alert to receive an email notification or an SMS when a Railroad Crossing Violation event occurs.
You can configure settings for selected vehicles, or use the following workflow to configure settings for all vehicles in your fleet:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Within Fleet settings, go to Safety > Event Detection.
-
Enable Railroad Crossing Violation Detection.
-
Select a speed threshold:
-
0 mph (most sensitive)
-
5 mph (default)
-
10 mph
-
15 mph (least sensitive)
-
-
Choose whether to enable or disable the in-cab audio alerts.
-
Click Save.
