The Assets Summary (Overview () > Assets) displays lists of current and historical assets in your organization. These lists enable you to have a quick snapshot of your asset details in one place.
You can filter each list using the search or by applying Tags, Attributes, Trailer Type (if applicable) or by Gateway (paired or unpaired).
To optimize tracking of your assets in the dashboard and enable asset-specific settings, such as asset-specific reports, alerts, and discoverability in the Samsara Driver App, you can convert the asset category to an alternate asset category. For more information, see Asset Type Assignment for Asset Gateways (AGs) and Asset Tags (ATs).
Sorting and Filtering
Vehicles are powered vehicles in your fleet, such as a van, truck, or tractor unit.
Trip details listed in each vehicle row, including location of the vehicle or when the last trip of the vehicle occurred, are sourced from its paired vehicle gateway (VG). Other associated vehicle identifier information, such as the license plate number, VIN, make, year, or model, are sourced from the Managing Vehicle Gateway (VG) Device Settings.
Trailers are unpowered vehicles towed by powered vehicles, such as flatbed trailers.
Assets with the trailer asset type can be selected from the Samsara Driver App, are included in tractor and trailer pairings, and are used to calculate utilization based on motion.
Trip details listed in each trailer row, including location of the trailer or when the last trip of the trailer occurred, are sourced from its paired asset gateway (AG). Other associated trailer identifier information, such as the license plate number, VIN, make, year, or model, are sourced from the Powered Asset Gateway (AG) Device Settings.
Equipment refers to powered assets and heavy equipment that have a powered AG and are assigned as equipment either during installation or in the settings.
-
Examples of powered assets include: scissor lifts, light towers, or generators.
-
Examples of heavy equipment include: forklifts, excavators, and dozers.
Assets with the equipment asset type do not display within the Samsara Driver App, are not included in ELD logs, and the utilization is calculated based on engine hours. For more information on asset utilization, see Utilization Report.
Monitoring details listed in each equipment row, including utilization and location, are sourced from its paired asset gateway (AG). Other associated equipment identifier information, such as the name of the equipment, license plate, or VIN or PIN, are sourced from the Powered Asset Gateway (AG) Device Settings.
Unpowered are assets such as roll offs, containers, or water tanks. Unpowered can also be mission critical tools, equipment, materials, and other assets managed by the AT11 Asset Tag.
Sorting and filtering tools define how events are ordered and refined for review. You can sort events by priority, date, or driver name and filter by event type, behavior label, AI Context Label, or tag. Sticky filters preserve your selected filters and view mode between sessions so your preferred layout remains active as you navigate.
Other associated asset identifier information, such as name of the asset, license plate, or VIN or PIN, are sourced from the Powered Asset Gateway (AG) Device Settings or Asset Tag (AT) Device Settings.
An asset is considered Uncategorized if it meets one of the following criteria:
-
If the gateway it was previously associated with is deactivated, at which point the asset is no longer connected to it.
-
If the gateway is activated in the asset, but not installed.
The installation of the gateway is what confirms the asset type.
-
If the asset was created via API and set to Uncategorized.
The asset type will be automatically detected when the gateway is connected with a Samsara cable and your asset is first powered on. No action needs to be taken; however you can make a manual classification if you know the type of asset your gateway will be installed on.
