When you install an AG52 or AG53 on a trailer, such as a dry-van trailer or flatbed, the 7-way cable utilizes the power interface from the pulling or towing vehicle to enable the AG to function in real time. When not connected to power, the AG operates in battery-saving mode.
Before you install your AG, review the Equipment and Dry-Van Trailer Cable Matrix for Powered Asset Gateways (AGs) to ensure you obtain the appropriate cable for your configuration. Then perform the instructions to install the AG for your configuration:
Before installing the AG52 or AG53 on your trailer, ensure the ABS is functioning correctly. When you start the trailer, the ABS light should turn on for 3 to 5 seconds and then turn off. If the light behaves differently, it may indicate a problem with the trailer's ABS system.
Caution
Before beginning work on the trailer, ensure it is taken out of service and secured with wheel chocks and a glad hand lock.
To install the AG52 or AG53 for ABS systems on your dry-van trailer, use the following workflow:
-
Activate the device in the Samsara dashboard if you have not already done so.
Log into the Samsara dashboard or go to https://cloud.samsara.com/activate. You can also follow the link in your

email. -
Turn off the power to the trailer.
-
Locate and disconnect the 5-pin ABS Weather-Pack (TTMA) connector on your trailer from the 7-way cable (typically located near the rear axle). To locate the connector, trace the wire harness from the ABS unit.
-
Connect the male end of the Samsara cable to the 7-way connector and the female end of the Samsara cable to the ABS 5-pin connector. Ensure the connection is latched and secure.
-
Select the desired mounting location.
Tip
When selecting a location for your device, consider the following:
-
Ensure that the device and cables are not at risk of being damaged by moving parts. If possible, test the device in the desired mounting location before final installation.
-
Verify that the cable has adequate clearance to reach the AG and the electrical connection.
-
For optimal GPS and cellular connectivity, mount the device as close to the edge of the trailer as possible. Ensure that the AG has at least one unobstructed side facing the sky or ground.
-
Avoid installing the device within metallic structures, such as metal enclosures or trailers, as this can negatively affect cellular and GPS connectivity.
-
-
Attach the mounting bracket to the mounting surface using one of the following methods:
Caution
To prevent damage to the mounting tabs, tighten screws to a maximum torque of 1.4 Nm (12.4 lbf-in). If using your own screws, ensure they are not larger than the size specified below.
-
Self-drilling screws: Use the provided #6 self-drilling screws.
-
Machine screws: Drill through-holes for the mounting bracket and secure it using the provided 6-32 machine screws, washers, and lock nuts.
-
-
Securely mount the AG to the bracket using the two provided machine screws.
Caution
To prevent damage to the mounting tabs, tighten screws to a maximum torque of 1.4 Nm (12.4 lbf-in). If using your own screws, ensure they are not larger than the size specified below.
-
Plug the cable into the AG and twist to lock.
-
Secure the wire harness every 30 to 50 cm using cable ties. Ensure cables are free from sharp edges, bending load, or tension.
-
Turn on power to the trailer.
-
Verify that the trailer's ABS light comes on for 3 to 5 seconds during startup before it powers off.
-
Reference AG LED Status and Actions and perform the action that corresponds to the observed LED behavior.
Note
The LED illuminates for up to 30 minutes after you turn on the power to the trailer. If you do not observe the LED, disconnect and reconnect the power cable to reset the LED.
-
Confirm successful connection in your Samsara Dashboard.
The Samsara dashboard can take up to two minutes to update after you turn on the supply power.
-
Configure the Asset Gateway Power Loss Settings.
-
For more information about how ABS lamp faults display in the Samsara dashboard, see Trailer ABS Visibility and Alerts or to configure an alert for ABS lamp codes, see Fault Code Alerts.
-
Manage the trailer from the Samsara dashboard.
