Samsara decodes vehicle year, make, and model (YMM) from the vehicle identification number (VIN) and from vehicle data the Vehicle Gateway (VG) reads from the engine control unit (ECU). You cannot edit year, make, or model directly in the Samsara dashboard—those fields reflect what the VIN decodes to.
To correct YMM, update the VIN in the vehicle or gateway settings. If the VIN is already correct and YMM is still wrong, contact Samsara Support to refresh the decoded vehicle record.
Confirm the correct 17-character VIN from a physical source, such as the cabin label, the door or frame sticker, or the vehicle registration. Then update the VIN in the Samsara dashboard.
You can also edit the VIN from gateway settings. For gateway navigation, see Managing Vehicle Gateway (VG) Device Settings.
-
Click Overview > Assets > Vehicles and select the affected vehicle.
-
Open the vehicle's Settings from the more actions ( ••• ) menu, or select Edit Vehicle.
-
Under Asset Identification, next to the VIN field, select Edit.
-
Enter the correct 17-character VIN and select Save.
The VIN must be alphanumeric and cannot contain the letters I, O, or Q.
After you save, drive the vehicle for 5 to 10 minutes so the gateway can refresh its data. Then confirm the VIN, year, make, and model update on the vehicle overview, and monitor the vehicle for the next few days to make sure YMM stays correct.
Note
Samsara reads the VIN from the vehicle's ECU. If the ECU broadcasts a VIN, a manual entry in the dashboard does not override it, and the VIN can revert.
If the VIN reverts or the ECU reports the wrong VIN, use the matching action:
-
If the ECU outputs the wrong VIN (for example, after an engine or ECU replacement), have the engine manufacturer or a licensed dealer reprogram the ECU to broadcast the correct VIN. Samsara cannot change ECU-sourced VINs.
-
If the wrong VIN comes from a gateway that was paired to a different vehicle, deactivate the gateway, power-cycle it in the correct vehicle, then start a trip so it re-reads the VIN. For deactivation steps, see Deactivate a Vehicle Gateway (VG).
-
If you suspect a wrong OBD or ECU cable is causing an unexpected VIN, send Support a clear photo of the vehicle's OBD port so they can confirm the correct cable.
If the VIN is correct in the vehicle and gateway settings but YMM is still wrong, the decoded record needs a backend refresh.
Paste the VIN into the NHTSA VIN Decoder and confirm the year it returns. If the decoder returns the correct year but the dashboard still shows the wrong YMM, open a support request (Report an Issue) and include:
-
The VG serial number or Gateway ID.
-
The vehicle VIN.
-
The correct year, make, and model you expect to see.
-
A screenshot of the vehicle details showing the incorrect YMM.
-
A clear photo of the vehicle information sticker that shows the make, model, year, and VIN.
After Support applies the correction, refresh the dashboard to confirm the updated YMM. If it is still wrong after Support confirms the change, follow up with Support so they can continue the review.
