For large fleets, managing multiple gateways in the dashboard can be cumbersome. To lessen that burden, you can change settings for multiple gateways in a single instance using the bulk gateway upload feature instead of editing gateway settings individually.
To configure or manage your gateways in bulk, you export a template in comma-separated values (CSV) format. This file identifies all existing gateways, their unique Samsara IDs, and additional fields that you can modify.
If you plan to move or replace a gateway, first deactivate the old gateway from your dashboard and activate the new gateway. For full instructions, reference the following topics:
To manage gateways, see the following topics:
Note
You must be an organizational administrator to bulk upload gateways.
You can use the bulk upload tool to modify information about your Asset Gateways (AGs) and Vehicle Gateways (VGs). For AGs, you can modify the gateway name, license plate, tags, and user notes. For VGs, you can modify the name, license plate, tags, VIN, auxiliary inputs, harsh event settings, and user notes.
The easiest way to modify information about your gateways is to first download the gateway list from the Samsara dashboard. Samsara provides the gateway list in comma-separated values (CSV) format and includes all editable fields. Consider the following notes before downloading and making changes to the gateways list.
-
The file must be a properly formatted CSV file.
-
The first row of the CSV file is the header row, and you must include it in the file.
-
The header row must contain all fields from the CSV table.
-
The CSV file must contain no more than 500 rows of data (including one row for the header).
-
Fields that contain commas (such as device names and tags) will disrupt the import format. To avoid errors, revise any fields containing commas.
-
Leading 0s in numerical fields will be truncated in exported files. Device names with numbers, license numbers, and user notes are at risk of this issue. Make sure to check your imported file for missing digits.
To download your gateways list and edit gateways in bulk:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From within Devices, select Devices > Gateways.
-
Select More Actions > Upload CSV.
-
Select Gateways List to download your existing gateway data.
Note
When you update your gateways using a template, ensure that you use only this template containing the list of your gateways and the fields that are configurable. Any other formats will display an error.
-
Update the information in the CSV file and save the changes (see CSV Format for Gateways for detailed formatting requirements).
-
After you edit your file, select Upload a file.
-
Choose the CSV file from your computer, or drag and drop the CSV file to the window.
-
Click Preview to review the admins that will be added and edited.
-
Click Confirm to save the changes.
