Note
This feature is only available for fleets in Europe.
The Global Speed Limit Database (GSLD) utilized by Samsara provides speed limits specifically for passenger vehicles. However, if your fleet consists of commercial vehicles, such as trucks or buses, you have the option to expand the database to include additional speed limits tailored to different vehicle types.
When you expand your database to include commercial speed limits, Samsara will automatically use the appropriate speed limit data based on vehicle type, weight, and location. If commercial speed limit data is available for a specific road, it will be used to:
-
Generate Safety Inbox events
-
Trigger speeding alerts
-
Impact safety scores
-
Display speed limits across various areas in the Dashboard
This functionality mirrors how passenger vehicle speed limit data is currently utilized.
To ensure high data quality, Samsara licenses commercial speed limit data from the same third-party vendor that provides data for passenger vehicles. This information is updated quarterly, in sync with the quarterly GSLD updates.
In cases where commercial speed limit data is unavailable for a road segment, Samsara defaults to using the existing passenger speed limit data. If necessary, you can manually edit the speed limit using the Map Editor when you override the speed limit.

To apply commercial speed limits accurately, you must both enable Commercial Speed Limits and upload vehicle weights. Without vehicle weight data, Samsara cannot determine whether a vehicle qualifies for commercial speed limits, and standard limits will apply instead.
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
In Fleet settings, go to Safety > Event Detection > Speeding.
-
Enable the option to Use commercial speed limits when available.
-
Specify commercial vehicle weights.
You can specify the weights on an individual vehicle basis or upload the weights (
Gross Vehicle WeightandWeight Unit) for multiple vehicles in the device settings of the associated Vehicle Gateway.
