Samsara uses speeding severity definitions to highlight speeding events and assess their impact on the driver safety score. These settings enable organizations to manage speeding behavior effectively while prioritizing significant events. Features like the Max Speed threshold further aid in identifying and routing severe speeding events for coaching and review.
Severity level definitions define speeding for the following purposes:
-
Defining Speeding Reports:Severity levels are used to organize and present speeding data in Speeding Reports.
-
Calculating Safety Scores: By default, severity definitions aggregate speeding events for each level regardless of duration. However, they can be configured to require a minimum speeding duration before inclusion in the safety score, ensuring minor violations are excluded.
-
Identifying Speeding Trends: Severity levels highlight trends in the Safety Overview to provide actionable insights.
-
Creating Safety Alerts: When configuring alerts to receive notifications for speeding, the settings rely on the severity level definitions for speeding.
The default speeding settings are applied automatically to your fleet. However, you can customize your speeding settings to better suit the needs of your organization:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From Fleet, select Safety > Event Detection.
-
Within the Speeding settings, adjust the threshold and duration for each Severity Level:
-
Over Limit: Set the maximum speed for each severity level. Choose a threshold type: either a percentage (%) over the speed limit or a fixed speed difference in mph or km/h. Ensure thresholds are sequential and do not overlap.
-
Duration: Set the minimum time a vehicle must remain at the specified severity level for it to be flagged (minimum of 60 seconds).
-
-
To include speeding severity levels in the safety score only when they exceed the duration threshold, enable the setting Apply speeding severity levels to Scoring & Reporting.
-
To send Severe events to the coaching queue without requiring review, enable Automatically Add to Coaching. For more details, see Automatically Send Events to Coaching.
-
To set a minimum speed threshold to route a speeding event for coaching, enable Max Speed and configure the setting.
-
Save to apply the changes.
Changes take effect immediately across your fleet but are not retroactive.
-
To view and manage speeding events, see Triage Speeding Events.
