Configure speeding settings to automatically send detected speeding events to the Safety Inbox for review and coaching. The Safety Inbox prioritizes the highest-risk speeding behaviors so that managers can focus on the most critical incidents first.
To view trips, you must be a Full Admin or have a custom role with read permissions for both the vehicle and the driver.
Speeding events are displayed in the Safety Inbox when they are automatically detected based on configured Speeding Settings or when a speeding label is manually applied to an event. The following are the types of speeding events that display in the Safety Inbox:
-
Max Speed: Creates an event when a vehicle exceeds a defined maximum speed for a continuous duration (for example, 65 mph for 60 seconds or more).
-
Severe Speeding: Creates an event when a vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by the configured amount and duration (for example, 12 mph or more over the limit for 60 seconds).
-
Speeding (Manual): Displays events where a speeding label has been manually applied to the event.
After you Configure Speeding Settings, use the following workflow to review and manage speeding events for completed or in-progress trips:
-
From the Samsara dashboard, select Safety (
) > Safety Inbox > Needs Review.
-
Use the Event Type filter to select one or more speeding severity types.
-
Apply additional filters to narrow results:
-
Tags to isolate specific driver groups or vehicles.
-
Date Range to focus on a defined review period.
-
Attributes to group events by criteria such as behavior label or assigned coach.
The Safety Inbox retains these filters between sessions so your selected view remains active when you return to the page.
-
-
Sort events by Priority to display the highest-risk incidents first, or switch view between Event, Trip, or Driver by Day to evaluate speeding patterns across multiple contexts.
-
Select a row to open the Safety Event Summary.
The summary view updates automatically based on the selected view mode and displays the driver’s safety score, event behaviors, and number of detected speeding violations for that trip or driver.
-
After you review the event summary, you can take the following next steps:
-
Analyze speeding trends: Use the speed graph, Trip Speeding Summary, or Google Maps Street View to examine when and where speeding occurred and to identify patterns in severity and duration.
-
Administrative actions: Route the event for manager-led or self-coaching, update the coaching status, or edit the posted speed limit based on context from the event.
-
The speed graph in a Safety Inbox event provides a visual timeline of speeding activity, helping you assess when and where violations occurred and how severe they were. The following insights are available from the graph:
-
Zoom into time segments by clicking and dragging on the graph, or adjusting the time slider to narrow the time window.
-
View speed and limit details by hovering over any point to display speed, posted limit, and amount over. Speeding events are color-coded by severity to support quick visual evaluation.
To review broader patterns or understand location context, you can take the following additional actions:
-
View trip-level speeding patterns—including total time spent speeding, number of violations, and severity breakdown—by opening the Trip Speeding Summary.
-
Examine the event environment by opening the violation location in Google Street View.
After reviewing a speeding event, you can take the following actions directly from the summary Details or timeline:
-
Send to coaching: Route the event for self-led or manager-led coaching (click Send to Driver (
) from the event timeline for a single event, or click Send to Coaching from the top of the summary view to apply to all events).
-
Update coaching status: Apply a Coaching Status such as Reviewed, Coached, or Dismissed to reflect coaching completion (use the more actions ( ••• ) menu in the event timeline for a single event, or the dropdown next to the Send to Coaching button to apply to all events).
-
Edit speed limit: Open the location of the speeding event in the Map Editor (click (
) Edit from the summary details).
