The Safety Inbox provides tools for reviewing and resolving safety events. You can use automated or AI-assisted workflows or manually review events to confirm detection accuracy, update behavior or context labels, and take follow-up actions such as dismissing, recognizing, or sending events to coaching.
To review detected safety events and determine the appropriate outcome for each, use the following workflow:
-
From the Samsara dashboard, select Safety (
) > Safety Inbox.
-
Choose a view mode to group events:
-
Event: Review a single event to verify detections, review video, and confirm labels before resolution.
-
Trip: Review all safety events from a trip to see how behaviors occurred in sequence.
-
Driver by Day: Review a driver’s events for a single day to identify recurring behaviors and determine coaching priorities.
-
-
Filter and sort events to focus on specific drivers, vehicles, or behaviors: Use the filter menus to refine the list by Driver, Vehicle, Event Type, Behavior, AI Context Label, or Tag, and sort by Priority or Date to review the most relevant events first.
-
Select an event to open the Safety Event Summary.
Note
To triage a speeding event, see the detailed instructions to Review Speeding Events in the Safety Inbox.
-
Review the event type, video, and contextual data.
-
Confirm that the correct driver is assigned to the event. If the driver assignment is incorrect, reassign the event to the correct driver.
Assigning the correct driver ensures the coaching workflow and any shared events reflect accurate driver information.
-
Verify event classification. To add or remove event labels, click EDIT next to the label. To assign a behavior label as an indicator—for example, to flag an event for dismissal by an admin or to reserve it for another reason—use the Other behavior label.
Removing automated or adding custom labels changes the event classification and supports improvements in detection accuracy. In exported reports, manually added labels show as Manual Events, but all event types are combined in the Safety Overview.
-
For additional context about the event, review the Insights card, which provides an AI-generated summary of the detected behavior, trip, or event conditions—for example, highlighting recurring behaviors or relevant factors such as weather or visibility.
-
(Optional) Provide feedback for the safety event video and the Insights card.
Providing regular feedback improves the accuracy of the detection.
-
Take follow-up action for one or more behaviors:
-
Individual behaviors: From the timeline, take action on individual behaviors:
-
Quick actions: Use the quick-action icons to send the behavior to a driver (
) for coaching or dismiss the detection (
).
-
Additional options: Select the more actions ( ••• ) menu to choose a coaching status such as Needs Coaching, Needs Recognition, Recognized, Reviewed, or Coached.
-
-
All events in view: From the bulk-action menu in the top navigation bar, apply a Needs Coaching status or resolve all unactioned events in the current Safety Inbox view at once.
-
-
To retrieve a one minute of video, click the more actions ( ••• ) menu > Request minute of video.
-
To undo an action, click the undo icon (
) or the more actions ( ••• ) menu and select the correct action.
-
To continuously monitor the efficacy of your coaching program, view or Schedule a Report or configure alerts.
When you open an event from the Safety Inbox, the Safety Event Summary displays additional context and data captured for the event. These details provide a full view of the driver, trip, and event conditions to support accurate coaching decisions.
-
Event media: A video or still image is uploaded based on the event type and the available camera views. Most events include short video clips—for example, 5–10 seconds for distracted or policy violation events and 30 seconds for crash events. Certain detections, such as camera obstruction or misalignment, capture only still images. If additional footage is needed, you can request one minute of video during event review.
-
Driver Insights: Displays the driver’s current safety score and recent coaching activity. This information appears in all view modes.
-
Trip Activity Insights: Displays total trip time and total distance traveled. In an Event Summary, selecting View all events in trip opens the Trip Summary to show these details. This data is also visible by default in Trip and Driver by Day views.
-
Speed and sensor data: Provides vehicle telemetry recorded during the event, including speed, acceleration, and pedal input (when available) from the Vehicle Gateway.
-
Event metadata: Provides details automatically logged during detection within the preview frame, such as timestamp, vehicle sensitivity, maximum G-force, and GPS location (if available).
-
Comments: Displays all notes and feedback associated with the event.
The Comments tab is divided into the following sections, defined by visibility:
-
Internal comments are visible to users with appropriate Safety permissions and are not visible to drivers. Use these comments to record internal notes, such as dismissal reasons, coordination details, or follow-up context.
-
To Driver comments become visible to the driver only after the event is shared with them for coaching or review. Use these comments to provide guidance or context the driver will see when viewing the event.
-
-
Activity log: Provides a timestamped record of all actions taken on an event, including changes to coaching status, dismissals with reason codes, label updates, and video retrievals. Each entry identifies the user responsible for the action and the time it occurred.
