You can customize the Fleet Overview Map () to gain deeper geographical and operational insights by changing the map base, toggling overlays, and switching between different map markers.
For example, you can combine satellite imagery with real-time weather data to see how conditions impact your fleet, or use color coding to differentiate assets by Tags.
To customize the map, click Map Options () at the top right, then select between these options:
-
Map Base: Switch between street, terrain, and satellite maps depending on your needs.
-
Overlay: Add layers to display live data on weather, construction zones, traffic, public alerts, and other information.
-
Marker Color: Color-code map markers based on asset type and status or use Tags to distinguish between assets based on vehicle type, region, and other categories.
Map Bases are the underlying map layer that provides geographic context, such as roads, terrain, or satellite imagery. Options include:
-
Default: Standard street view suitable for most monitoring
-
Terrain: Elevation and landform details for off-road or rural areas
-
Satellite: High-resolution satellite imagery for precise location identification
Overlays are optional visual layers you can add on top of the map to display additional data in context. You can apply more than one overlay at a time for insights on:
-
Real-Time Conditions: Traffic, weather, public alerts, and construction zones
-
Fleet and Vehicle Activity: Idling Events, Fleet Clustering, and Samsara Bluetooth Network coverage
-
Geographic and Regional Information: Addresses, Geofences, Connected Sites, LSD Grid, and Custom Overlays
Available Overlay options include:

Fleet Clustering |
Groups nearby assets into clusters ( Hovering over a cluster displays a summary by asset type and status. NoteFleet Clustering is always applied when more than 500 vehicles are displayed in the map. The map switches to individual markers when fewer vehicles are in view, unless Fleet Clustering is manually enabled in the Map Options ( |

|
Sites |
Displays a Sites map marker ( Hovering displays a recent image from a Site IP camera in that location. Clicking opens the Connected Sites dashboard. |
|
|
|
Displays custom geospatial overlays for special service areas, such as snow routes and districts. |
Map markers are icons that represent vehicles and other assets in the map. By default, map marker colors and shapes indicate the type, movement, and connectivity of the asset:
-
(Green Triangle): Moving vehicle
-
(Green Square): Online asset
-
(Green Circle): Online vehicle
-
(Black Square): Offline asset
-
(Black Circle): Offline or stationary vehicle
-
(Red Circle): Vehicle is in a Risk Zone
You can also use Tags to color-code map markers based on other characteristics like vehicle type, region, or jurisdiction.
To add color-coded map markers using Tags, follow this workflow:
-
Create or edit a Tag and assign a color to each unique category, such as vehicle type or jurisdiction.
-
Navigate to your Fleet Overview (
).
-
Open Map Options (
) at the top right.
-
Select Tag under Marker Color.
