Legal subdivisions (LSDs) refers to a system of land surveying used in western Canada, primarily for mapping and navigating oil and gas sites in remote locations. This grid-based coordinate system is grouped by townships, and then further narrowed down to a grid of LSDs. LSD coordinates include a number and a township name. For example, LSD 4 of township 22-92-10W5 is named 4-22-92-10W5.
Organizations in Canada can view and search for LSD coordinates on the Samsara dashboard map to quickly break down regional coverage and find locations for specific wells and related service areas. When searching for LSD coordinates, you must include the full legal subdivision (LSD) number. For example, searching for 7-25-24-1-W5 will return results, but searching for only a quarter section such as NW-6-67-13-W4 will not.

When you search for an address, you can instead enter LSD coordinates. The LSD coordinates automatically convert to latitude and longitude in the following areas of the Samsara dashboard:
-

-
Proximity Search (Overview (
) > Proximity)
-
Dispatch (

LSD coordinates can be used in place of latitude and longitude to create new addresses. If you want to add an individual LSD coordinate to your Samsara address book, you can enter an LSD coordinate into the Address field.
If you want to add LSD coordinates in bulk, this is possible through CSV upload by including the LSD coordinates in the Address column in place of a standard address. It is also possible through Create Address API by including the LSD coordinates in the formattedAddress field in place of a standard address. In both scenarios, Samsara automatically detects and geocodes the LSD coordinates as it creates the address.
