If your fleet uses specific boundaries or service routes, you can add geospatial map overlays to the Samsara dashboard. After you upload an overlay, you can then toggle the map from both the Fleet Overview and the Coverage Map. Selected metadata is also available for display when you click on a specific polygon (service zone) or polyline (route).
To add an overlay, you upload the geospatial JSON (geoJSON) that defines the boundary. You can also add the overlay as a JPEG or PNG file.
Note
GeoJSON files must be correctly projected to the WGS 84 coordinate system prior to upload. Since this is a common coordinate system, your map may not require re-projection. If it does, most geospatial mapping applications and software solutions are able to re-project when exporting a geospatial file as geoJSON. If you don't have access to software with this capability, you can use free online tools such as Mapshaper.
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From Fleet, select Maps.
-
Click Upload overlay and then upload a file or drag and drop it on the dialog (geoJSON is preferred). Then, click Upload.
-
Define an Overlay name and the Opacity percentage of the boundaries (either polygons or road lines).
-
Select whether you want to display Metadata when you click on the geospatial map.
Metadata is carried over from the uploaded geoJSON file, and cannot be changed or edited within Samsara.
After you define your geospatial map overlays you can apply them on top of maps in the Samsara dashboard.
-
Navigate to the Fleet Overview or the Coverage Map.
-
In the Map Options panel, select the name of the Custom Overlay you want to display.
As needed, toggle the display on or off.
-
If you configured the overlay to display metadata, select the polygon (i.e., a service zone) or polyline (i.e., a route) to view the metadata.
