Starting May 14, 2025, you can opt in to enforce an 8-character minimum for new driver passwords and resets. This update strengthens security measures for your fleet by ensuring drivers use more robust passwords.
Full Admins can configure stronger driver passwords from the Samsara dashboard (Settings () > Security > Password Policy).
Note
Starting October 7, 2025, the 8-character minimum will be enforced for all new driver passwords and password changes. Existing driver passwords that don’t meet this requirement will remain valid unless the password is manually updated.
When you enable the 8-character password requirement:
-
Only new drivers and password resets are affected. Drivers added after the toggle is enabled (or drivers who reset their password from the Samsara Driver App or Samsara dashboard) will be required to use passwords with at least 8 characters.
-
Existing driver passwords remain valid. If a driver’s password was created before the toggle is enabled and it’s shorter than 8 characters, it will continue to work unless a password reset is initiated.
-
Other driver updates won’t trigger the requirement. Updating driver details like username or license number will not enforce the new password length rule. The 8-character minimum only applies when a password is changed.
When the Stronger Driver Password toggle is enabled, the following rules apply during driver password creation or reset:
-
Minimum length requirement: Passwords must be at least 8 characters.
-
Password strength indicators:
-
Empty field: Displays message: "Password field cannot be left empty."
-
Weak password: Displays message: "Password must contain at least 8 characters."
-
Moderate password: Displays message: "Add numbers and special characters for a stronger password."
-
Strong password: No additional prompt.
-
-
Error messaging: If a password is submitted with fewer than 8 characters, an error appears: "Password must contain at least 8 characters."
