After you configure an auxiliary (AUX) input—such as a door or stop paddle trigger—the status should update on the Samsara dashboard when the physical input changes. If the status does not update as expected, use the following checks to isolate whether the issue is with wiring, the signal level, or input inversion.
For configuration steps, including Aux Input Type, Input Number, and Invert signal, see Configure an Auxiliary Input.
-
Confirm you are viewing the correct gateway and asset in the Samsara dashboard and that the gateway is connected and healthy.
-
Verify the AUX input assignment:
-
Confirm the input is configured with the intended Aux Input Type (for example, Door or Stop Paddle).
-
Confirm the Input Number matches the physical AUX wire used (for example, AUX 3 on the harness, such as a brown wire on a CBL-VG-CAUX cable).
-
-
Inspect the wiring and connectors for the AUX input.
Check that the trigger wire is fully seated in the correct AUX terminal, that the gateway and AUX circuit share a stable ground, and that there are no loose or damaged connectors.
-
Measure the AUX signal with a voltmeter while you change the input state.
With the connected device in each state (for example, door open and door closed, or stop arm extended and retracted), record the DC voltage on the selected AUX input.
-
Compare the measured voltages to the expected On and Off thresholds.
A voltage under 3.3 V is considered Off. The voltage must surpass 5 V for the Vehicle Gateway to consider the device On. If you see voltage changes across these thresholds but the dashboard status does not change, the issue is likely configuration or inversion rather than wiring. For wiring and voltage verification on the VG54 and VG55, see Connect Auxiliary Inputs to the VG54 and VG55.
-
Verify the voltage-to-state mapping and adjust inversion if the physical states are reversed.
With the voltages recorded, compare which physical state (such as door open or closed) corresponds to high or low voltage, and then compare this to what the dashboard displays. If the physical states are reversed in the dashboard, enable or disable Invert signal for that AUX input and test again until the dashboard state matches the physical behavior.
-
If the AUX input still does not update, compare behavior with other AUX inputs and capture evidence.
Check whether other configured AUX inputs on the same gateway update normally. If other inputs work, focus on the specific non-responsive input by collecting photos of the wiring, screenshots of the AUX configuration, and your recorded voltage readings for both states before you continue troubleshooting or contact support.
