Note
To view the IFTA report, your dashboard locale must be set to United States or Canada and you must have a Full Admin role or a custom role with permissions to view the IFTA report.
The IFTA Report (Fuel & Energy > IFTA Mileage) displays mileage information that pertains to the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) by Jurisdiction or Vehicle. The report includes both regulated and unregulated vehicles. You can view the total miles for all jurisdictions in the Jurisdictions tab.
The IFTA Report uses standardized distance which prioritizes the electronic control unit (ECU) and uses GPS as a fallback when ECU data is unavailable. This ensures that data across the platform is consistent and accurate. To see why your IFTA report may have different figures compared to other reports, see Variance in Report Data.
To input your fuel purchase information into the Samsara IFTA report, you can Import Fuel Purchases through CSV upload or use Fuel Card Integrations with WEX and Fleetcor to automatically import fuel purchases made by your fleet. To see Samsara IFTA APIs, visit our developer portal. If your fuel purchases are unverified, see Fuel Purchases Report for more information.
You can run the report for monthly or quarterly time periods and can also narrow the scope of the results using the search or by applying tags.
You can view your IFTA report data only on a monthly or quarterly basis. When you view the report, data is visible for the previous month. For example, if the date is March 15th, the latest data you can view is the full report for the month of February. You can apply the same logic to quarterly reports. IFTA reports are available on the second day of the following month or quarter. Dates cannot be manually adjusted for daily or weekly time ranges.
By default, the IFTA report includes data from all vehicles that have a Vehicle Gateway (VG) installed. If you want to filter out vehicles that you do not need to report to IFTA, we recommend you assign tags to your IFTA vehicles and filtering your report with that tag. If your fleet does not have a VG or the VG did not gather data throughout the year, please reach out to your tax authority to see if you can supplement your IFTA filing with paper logs.
The report provides a brief summary of your Fleet IFTA MPG or KPL and displays the following information:
Field |
Description |
---|---|
Jurisdiction |
The contiguous 48 states and Canadian provinces, excluding DC. |
Fuel Type |
Type of fuel purchased. This field is only visible on downloaded IFTA reports. If you need to update the type of fuel, see Edit Fuel Type. |
Taxable Miles (mi) or Taxable Kilometers (km) |
Total number of miles or kilometers traveled on public roads by IFTA qualified vehicles. |
Total Miles (mi) or Kilometers (km) |
Total number of miles or kilometers traveled in that jurisdiction. |
Tax Paid Gallons or Tax Paid Litres |
Amount of fuel purchased, in gallons or liters, as determined by fuel receipts for all qualified motor vehicles in that region. To learn how to upload fuel purchase data, see Fuel Purchases Report. |
The IFTA Report is available to download in comma-separated values (CSV) format.
To download the IFTA Report:
The Fuel Type is only visible on downloaded IFTA reports. By default, vehicle fuel type is Unspecified until you Edit Fuel Type in Fuel & Energy Settings.
To edit the fuel type:
If you compare the IFTA report to a report that does not use standardized distance, you may see slightly different figures. Odometer-derived distances and GPS-derived distances are expected to be slightly different, as vehicle odometers rely solely on recording the number of revolutions of their tires and then multiplying by the circumference of that tire, and the values can be negatively affected by poor tire tread, poor road conditions, and other factors. Odometers are often around 3% off from GPS-derived values, and can even be 5% off in some cases.
The Fuel & Energy Report filters out any missing or under-reported data points, which ensures the results are more precise. This filtering might lead to slightly lower mileage reported in the Fuel & Energy Report compared to the IFTA report.
If you deleted vehicles from your dashboard or modified your Data Retention Settings in the last year, the figures you see for previous years may also be different. You can verify if either of these occurred in your Activity Log.
