Samsara Vehicle Gateways (VGs) provide cloud connectivity for real-time and historical tracking of sensor data (for specifications, see the VG Data Sheet). All Vehicle Gateway Models come with the device, corresponding cable for your diagnostic port, and mounting accessories.
After you activate your VG in the Samsara dashboard, you can install the VG on your asset. Watch the VG Installation Video for your VG model or follow the instructions below.

To install a VG:
-
Unbox the VG.
-
To ensure you have all the right hardware and install guides based on the cable type required for the vehicle. Reference the Vehicle Gateway Hardware Compatibility Matrix to confirm you have the appropriate hardware for your configuration.
-
Connect one end of the provided cable to the diagnostic port in the vehicle, typically located below the steering column, and the other end to the VG.
-
Observe the light on the gateway connection port of the gateway.
Initialization can take up to three minutes. During initialization, the light is orange. After initialization is complete and the gateway is connected to the Samsara Cloud, the light turns green.
Note
If the light flashes orange, the gateway is attempting to establish a WiFi or cellular connection to the Samsara Cloud. If it does not connect after three minutes:
-
Verify that the installation and physical location of the gateway and the truck are not obstructed (for example, not in a garage).
-
Perform a hard reboot: Unplug the gateway for 15 minutes, then plug it back in and take the vehicle on a short trip.
-
Contact Support if a location does not report.
-
-
To streamline gateway activation, see Streamline Hardware Installation with the Samsara Fleet App.
-
Next, set up the gateway in the Samsara dashboard. See Name a Gateway and Configure a Gateway.
-
If in the future, you need to replace a gateway, follow the steps outlined in the following topics:
The type of cable that you need to install a Vehicle Gateway (VG) depends on the type of port, pin count, and diagnostic needs of the vehicle. Verify the cable you need for your VG model before you install the VG. If you are exchanging a cable, reference the Cable Exchange Process.
Refer to the following tables for additional cables and accessories for your VG model:
The following table summarizes the cables available for each VG model. Click the cable code link to view the PDF install guide for that cable.
