For assets equipped with Asset Gateways (AGs) for Powered Assets and a Vehicle Gateway (VG) or an Industrial Gateway (IG15), you can use the asset Utilization Report (Reports ( ) > Assets > Utilization) to assess which assets are utilized most frequently, along with their locations and usage history.
The Utilization Report uses real-time data to provide a Summary of your current asset utilization which includes:
-
Average Utilization: The percentage of time an asset was used.
-
Average Hours Used (per day): The average number of hours an asset was used.
-
Asset used (Vehicles Used, Trailers Used, or Equipment Used): Total number of assets in your fleet that are utilized out of the total number of assets with gateways.
For archival or reporting purposes, you can schedule a report or export the Utilization Report to a comma-separated values (CSV) file (more actions (...) > Download CSV). If the option to schedule a Utilization Report does not display in your Samsara dashboard, contact Support to enable this feature.
Note
To enable accurate utilization reporting, you must first configure the Aux Input Type. The Aux Input must also be configured for hours to surface on the Utilization report for equipment using an APWR cable.
Select the asset type (Vehicle, Trailer, or Equipment) for which you want to view the report. Filter assets based on type by selecting specific Tags.
Based on your asset type, selected time frame, and filters, the Assets table displays the following information:
Field |
Description |
---|---|
Vehicle / Trailer / Equipment |
Asset name. |
Location |
Last location reported from the gateway. |
Utilization |
The percentage of time an asset was used during available hours. This percentage updates based on the Total Hours Available, divided by the Total Hours Used. |
Total Hours Used |
Total hours of activity. If the asset is active for less than a minute, the entire minute is counted toward total hours used.
|
Total Hours Available |
Total hours available for activity. By default, available hours are 12 hours per day for vehicles and trailers, or 24 hours per day for equipment. The hours adjust to your selected time range. For example, if you select a 30-day time range for a vehicle with the default 12 hours per day, the work day is multiplied by 30 (12 hours multiplied by 30 days), and the Total Hours Available will display 360 hours. To change the default settings, see Customize Available Hours. |
Average Hours Used Per Day (Vehicles and Trailers only) |
Total hours used divided by number of days in the time frame selected. |
Distance (Vehicles and Trailers only) |
Total distance the asset traveled based on GPS movement. |
Engine Hours Per Day (Equipment only) |
Sum of engine hours divided by number of days. |
Tags |
Tags that are assigned to the asset. |
By default, available hours are 12 hours per day for vehicles and trailers, or 24 hours per day for equipment.
You can customize the available number of hours based on the number of hours per 7-day cycle.
To configure working hours for your assets, watch the video or follow the detailed workflow below:
-
Select one or more assets from the Utilization Report.
-
Select Edit hours available.
To calculate the working hours for your assets, multiply the hours in a work day by 7 days. For example, if the work day is 10 hours, 10 hours multiplied by 7 days is 70 hours, so you would enter 70 hours.
-
Enter the number of available hours for one week.
-
Save your changes.
