To segment drivers or vehicles into teams or easily identifiable groups, you can create and assign tags. Tags enable you to zoom in on the performance of individual teams or groups, such as fuel, safety, or route performance.

From the Samsara Fleet Overview, you can view groups of vehicles and drivers, such as for a specific team, with tags. Filter by the Tag name to view results for that tag only, or select multiple tags to view results for multiple groups. Tags are powerful when used in Samsara Reports: You can use them to view the performance of individual teams, such as fuel, safety, and route performance.
You can create and edit an unlimited number of tags or customize which vehicles and drivers have tag assignments at any time. Vehicles and drivers can also be associated with multiple teams and therefore can be assigned multiple tags:

To create a tag, input the following information:
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
In Organization > Tags, select + Create a Tag.
-
Enter a name to identify your tag.
The tag name is essentially a group name. For example, you can create a tag to represent a geographic region or a distribution group. Tag names often mirror the names given internally for a group within an organization.
-
(Optional) To create a group within a parent group, you can create a nested tag. Enable Nest this tag under and select the parent tag from the menu.
You can use nesting to create sub-categories within your tags. For example, under a parent Distribution group, you could create more specific child tags for subcategories (such as regions) that fall under Distribution. If you assign a colored marker to the parent tag, all nested tags will inherit the parent's tag color.
Select the vehicles, assets, drivers sensors, or trailers that you want to assign to this tag.
-
(Optional) Assign a map marker color for vehicles or assets.
With colored markers for assets based on tags, you can visually differentiate between your assets on your Fleet Overview map. To prevent tag conflicts, assign only one colored tag to represent a unique attribute, such as vehicle type or jurisdiction.
To view your colored marker tags, from your Samsara dashboard, navigate to your Fleet Overview (
). At the top of the map select Map Options > Marker Color > Tag.
Assets with tags that do not have a color or have a tag conflict appear as a black marker on the Fleet Overview map.
Save the tag.
You can use tags to provide user access to team-specific information. For example, if your fleet has multiple divisions, each with their own division manager and dispatcher, you can use tags to segregate access to only the vehicles or drivers relevant for the administrator’s division.
After you create a tag, you can select Add user to tag and specify the administrator’s email and their level of access.

After you create tags, you can use them throughout the Samsara Dashboard to:
-
Filter the Overview for tagged vehicles and drivers.
-
Zero-in on Reports for the performance of individual teams, such as fuel, safety, or route performance.
To quickly add tags in bulk, you start with a template in comma-separated values format. When you export the template from the Samsara web interface, Samsara includes all existing tags and their unique Samsara ID. In the CSV file, you can add new tags or modify information about your existing tags:
From the Samsara dashboard, select Settings (
) > Organization > Tags.
-
Select More Actions (...) > Upload CSV.
Select Sample Template to start a new template without any existing data. To download your existing data, select Tags List. Samsara exports all existing data and associated information to the CSV file. You can modify existing assets or append new ones in the provided format. You will return to this screen later in this workflow to upload your appended CSV file.
Open the CSV file in a spreadsheet application of your choice.
If you open the file in Microsoft Excel, the application identifies the ID as a scientific number. As a result, you must first set the format for the ID column as a Number and remove any additional decimal places before saving the file. If you skip this step you will overwrite the unique ID and will need to start over with a new file.
-
Make any desired changes to your tags and save the file. At a minimum, you must include the ID and tag Name. Use the CSV Format table below to properly format your CSV file prior to upload. Additional considerations when you modify the CSV file:
Any changes to existing tags (including blank or empty fields) will overwrite the definitions in Samsara upon import. Be careful in these cases to avoid accidentally overwriting existing stored data.
If you include a column and leave a value blank, Samsara assigns the default value for the field (typically null or blank).
Save your file and return to the Assets page in Samsara.
Select More Actions (...) > Upload CSV.
Choose the CSV file from your computer, or drag and drop the CSV file into the window.
Preview to review the contacts.
Confirm to confirm the changes.
The following table describes the CSV fields you can use to define your tags:
Field |
Description |
Example |
---|---|---|
ID |
Internal ID Number of tag. This field is not editable on import since it represents an internal storage identifier. It should also be blank when creating new tags. |
1 |
Name |
Tag Name: This field is required when creating new tags. |
Arizona |
Nest Tag Under |
If you want to create a hierarchy in your tag structure, this is the direct parent tag. Any tags you specify must already exist within the Organization or you will receive an error. Therefore, create any new tags you want to nest under before you import the file. |
Southwest |
Map Marker Color |
The color of assets belonging to this tag on the fleet overview page Color must be a value from the following list (values are case sensitive):
|
lightRed |
Driver Usernames |
Usernames of drivers to be added to tag. Multiple values must be comma separated. |
johns, adamg |
Asset IDs |
IDs of Assets that should be added to tag. Multiple values must be comma separated. See Locate Asset ID to find your existing assets IDs. |
234455677899693 |
Address IDs |
