If you retired a vehicle or you have a temporary rental vehicle for which you want to reuse a Vehicle Gateway (VG), you can move a VG between vehicles.
Each VG is associated with a single vehicle and reports GPS, sensor, diagnostic, and dash cam data to the Samsara Dashboard. Because Samsara logs the current and historical readings associated with the paired vehicle, it is important to deactivate and retrieve all video footage from the VG before attempting to reuse it in another vehicle. After deactivating the VG, all data associated with the old vehicle will be preserved. This enables you to reset the configuration and save all new data to the new vehicle.
Note
These instructions only apply to gateways that were previously-installed in another vehicle. Please use installation instructions for gateway installation and setup if you are installing a gateway for the first time.
-
In the Samsara Dashboard, deactivate the gateway from the old vehicle. Navigate to Settings > Devices and find the correct gateway in the list.
-
Note the gateway serial number associated with the vehicle so that you can later assign it to a new vehicle.
-
In the row for the gateway, select the action menu indicated by three dots ( ... ) and then select Deactivate Gateway.
-
Reactivate the VG in your organization. You can do this through cloud.samsara.com/activate or from Settings > Devices > Activate Devices.
-
(Optional) Rename the Vehicle associated with the Gateway.
From the action menu ( ... ) in the row for the gateway, select Settings , Enter the Vehicle Name, and then Save your changes.
-
Install the Samsara VG in the desired vehicle. Do not drive the vehicle until you have completed all of the tasks above.
You can now drive the vehicle. All driving, GPS, diagnostics, and maintenance data from this point forward will be saved to that vehicle.
After you unpair a gateway from a vehicle, the old vehicle will still show on the Assets list page. You can navigate to the old vehicle by clicking Overview > Assets and clicking the devices respective category (Vehicle, Trailers, Equipment, or Unpowered), then filter by No Gateway Paired as shown below.

If you do not want to see them in the list, you can Hide Unpowered Assets to temporarily remove those vehicles without a gateway from your view.
If that you have multiple gateways to deactivate, see Pairing or Deactivating Gateways in Bulk.
