If you receive a new Vehicle Gateway (VG) as a replacement for the same model (for example, a VG55 replacing an existing VG55), follow this workflow before driving the vehicle with the new gateway installed. If you receive a newer gateway model for an existing VG34, refer to Replace a VG34 with a Later Model Vehicle Gateway (VG).
Each VG is associated with a single vehicle and reports GPS, sensor, diagnostic, and dash cam data to the Samsara dashboard. When you pair a new VG with an existing vehicle, Samsara migrates any historical readings from the previous VG to the newly installed VG.
-
Remove the Samsara gateway that you want to replace from your vehicle, and install the replacement gateway.
Caution
Do not drive the vehicle until you have completed all of the tasks below.
-
Activate the replacement gateway.
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From within Devices, select Devices > Gateways.
-
Locate the replacement gateway that you activated in this workflow. Select the more actions menu ( ... ), and then select Pair Gateway.
-
Select the vehicle in which you have installed the replacement gateway and click Save to confirm the pairing.
When you assign the new gateway to the vehicle, the assignment removes the old gateway, but retains all data on the vehicle.
Note
You can now drive the vehicle. All driving, GPS, diagnostics, and maintenance data from this point forward will be saved to that vehicle in the Samsara dashboard.
-
(Optional) After you assign the new gateway to the vehicle, you can delete the previous vehicle using the following workflow:
Note
As long as you complete the previous steps before driving the vehicle with the new gateway, you can delete the duplicate vehicle. This vehicle will no longer have an associated VG.
-
Return the old hardware to Samsara if a return is authorized. For more information, see https://www.samsara.com/support/hardware-warranty.
If the old hardware is not eligible for return, dispose of it properly in accordance with your local recycling process. As the gateways contain lithium batteries, it is recommended to observe the local guidelines for battery and electronic waste disposal and take care when handling them. To find the recycling guidelines for your area, consult your local Recycling Center.
