Privacy Mode allows you to disable specific dash cam recordings while maintaining AI event detection capabilities. When recording is disabled, video will be unavailable for new safety events, video retrievals, or videos triggered by the panic button or dash cam button. This recording mode is designed to address driver privacy concerns and comply with regional data protection regulations, such as the GDPR, while retaining critical safety functionality. Privacy mode offers the following configurations:
-
Full Recording Mode: (Default) All cameras are recording.
-
Driver Privacy Mode: Disables inward-facing camera recording. All other cameras continue to record.
-
Complete Privacy Mode: Disables recording for all cameras.
Privacy Mode offers a balance between driver privacy and safety by preserving AI event detection while minimizing video recording and storage.
When Privacy Mode is enabled, AI Safety Event Detection will continue to detect and report safety events both in-cab and in the Samsara dashboard helping to prevent potential incidents. These events will populate the Safety Inbox and can be used for driver coaching.
During safety event review, a badge will indicate safety events uploaded during Privacy Mode, whether only the driver-facing camera or all cameras were disabled.
If there is no video available, the video player will be replaced by a map with a pin marking the event's location.
When recording is disabled in Privacy Mode, no new footage will be stored for the disabled camera stream. However, Privacy Mode settings are not retroactive, so historical footage recorded before enabling Privacy Mode will still be available for retrieval.
While Privacy Mode ensures that AI safety events continue to populate your dashboard, there are some important considerations:
-
Without video recordings, you will not be able to verify the accuracy of AI events. Samsara recommends testing devices with recording enabled before enabling Privacy Mode to ensure the system meets your accuracy expectations. When Privacy Mode is enabled for one or more cameras, AI-detected safety events without associated recordings should primarily be used for coaching, training, and fostering a safety-focused culture within your organization. AI-detected safety events without associated recordings should not be the sole basis for any employment decisions including, but not limited to, hiring, termination, compensation, or assignments related to routes and hours.
-
Changes to recording settings may take time to reach devices in low-connectivity areas, temporarily causing device behavior to differ from the configured settings.
-
Rolling Stop Detection is unavailable when Complete Privacy Mode is enabled, as this mode disables outward-facing video recording. This feature relies on video uploads for validation, so enabling Complete Privacy Mode disables event detection.
Before you enable Privacy Mode, review the Additional Privacy Mode Considerations.
