Cost Centers are individual business units, such as subsidiaries, divisions, or branches, that use Samsara products and are responsible for paying their license costs. Cost Centers use standard attributes to help you organize your entities, such as devices, users, or drivers, and their associated licenses in the Itemized Cost Breakdown so you can better allocate costs to your business units. For example, you might have a Cost Center for different locations, such as a branch in New York, or a branch in London.
To use Cost Centers, you must enable Itemized Cost Breakdown and have the relevant permissions to access Itemized Cost Breakdown.

You can assign the standard attributes, Asset Cost Center and Driver Cost Center, to assets or drivers, respectively. Relationships within these standard attributes are used to automatically allocate license costs to their respective Cost Centers within the Itemized Cost Breakdown report. Standard attributes also enable access to attributes bulk management tools like CSV uploads and APIs. To learn more, see the Add Attributes in Bulk section of our Attributes article.
To add a standard attribute to your drivers or assets, perform the following workflow:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Within Organization, select Tags & Attributes > Attributes.
-
Select the supported entity you would like to add a standard attribute to: Driver or Asset.

If you want to allocate costs of devices which have not yet been installed, Itemized Cost Breakdown supports this option for VGs, AGs and CMs. All of these devices must be activated within the Samsara dashboard to be represented within the Itemized Cost Breakdown report. To activate devices prior to installation see Activate Samsara Hardware and Accessories. Once these devices are installed, they automatically inherit the Asset Cost Center value assigned to the vehicle they are installed in, no further action needed.
Complete the following workflows to allocate the activated devices to Cost Centers:
-
VGs and AGs:
-
Assign licenses through License Management.
-
Assign Cost Center Standard Attributes to devices.
-
-
CMs:
To allocate the cost of these devices, assign Asset Cost Center standard attributes to these cameras:
You can use Add Attributes in Bulk for standard attributes as well. To avoid errors, you must have an exact character match to the standard attribute name.
The following table describes the CSV fields you can use to define your standard attribute:
