Samsara CM series Dash Cams continuously record audio and video based on Dash Cam Recording Logic and your configured settings. To modify dash cam settings to better suit the needs of your fleet, you can adjust the camera storage and video quality settings.
By default, dash cams utilize the Optimize for Quality setting for dash cam storage. You can customize storage (Optimize for Quality (default), Standard, Increased, Extended) to increase footage capacity with a lower video quality (to preview the video quality, hover over the setting).
Conversely, if you have a CM33 or CM34 and a Dash Cam Plus Add-on License, you can extend your storage capacity to accommodate more footage or higher resolution footage.
For more information about your video library or to initiate a video request, see Video Retrieval.
Your camera simultaneously records High Resolution Video (HRV) and Secondary Extended Video (SEV), a lower resolution video. Footage retrieval of HRV, SEV, and hyperlapse video is limited by the Dash Cam Storage Capacity.
HRV footage is available for clips up to 1 minute in length. For clips longer than 1 minute, the hyperlapse functionality enables retrieval of up to 40 minutes of sped-up footage.
To increase the total hours of footage available, you can allocate more storage to SEV which reduces the video storage capacity of HRV. Video storage capacity reduces when you enable optional features such as in-cab audio recording or install accessories such as the Samsara Camera Connector. For more information about the distribution of dash cam storage when utilizing optional features or accessories, see Dash Cam Storage Capacity.
