Samsara cameras continuously record audio and video based on Dash Cam Recording Logic for Video and Images and your configured settings. To modify camera settings to better suit the needs of your fleet, you can adjust the camera storage and video quality settings.
By default, dash cams use the Optimized for Quality storage setting. You can select Optimized for Quality (default), Standard, Increased, or Extended to increase footage capacity with lower video quality. Hover over a setting to preview video quality. The Samsara dashboard shows an approximate number of recording hours for each option so you can see how a change affects retention. Overwritten footage is not available for retrieval, and changing these settings does not restore it.
With some models (such as CM33 or CM34 with a Dash Cam Plus Add-on License), you can increase total storage capacity for more footage or higher-resolution footage. Reallocating storage between high-resolution and secondary extended video in the Samsara dashboard does not increase total capacity. Use Dash Cam Plus if you need more capacity at default or higher resolutions.
For more information about your video library or to request video, see Video Retrieval Process. Download and archive important videos to external storage as soon as possible after retrieval so they are not lost when older footage is overwritten.
Your camera simultaneously records High Resolution Video (HRV) and Secondary Extended Video (SEV), a lower resolution video. Footage retrieval of HRV, SEV, and hyperlapse video is limited by the Vehicle Camera Storage Capacity. When storage is full, older footage becomes unavailable because it is overwritten. Total retention depends on the camera model, your configuration, and how much the vehicle is driven.
By default, you can retrieve up to 1 minute of HRV. For longer periods, you can retrieve up to 40 minutes of sped-up hyperlapse footage.
To increase the total hours of footage available, allocate more storage to SEV, which reduces HRV capacity. To keep more high-resolution footage, allocate more storage to HRV, which reduces how much lower-resolution SEV footage you can retain. Video storage capacity also decreases when you enable optional features such as in-cab audio recording or install accessories such as the Samsara Camera Connector. For more information about dash cam storage distribution with optional features or accessories, see Vehicle Camera Storage Capacity.
