The Utility Service Vehicle (USV) Exemption helps you track work hours for drivers who alternate between exempt and non-exempt operations, such as for utility service work.
To begin using Utility Service Vehicle exemptions, you will need to enable it for your drivers. After it is enabled, drivers can claim this exemption in their Samsara Driver App.
Important
Carriers are responsible for ensuring that this exemption is only claimed when appropriate and permissible under the applicable DOT regulations.
If your driver is always exempt, you should instead mark them as ELD exempt and set the exemption reason to Utility Service Vehicle Exemption.
When this exemption is claimed, DOT logs show the entire day as Off Duty, while administrator and driver logs continue to display detailed work hours for transparency.
The exemption appears in two different locations on a driver's Hours of Service (HOS) report in the Samsara dashboard ( Compliance ( ) > Driver HOS). In daily log entries, a banner below the log graph indicates that the exemption was claimed for the day:
In detailed log entries, the Remark column will also display Utility Service Vehicle. This indicates the specific On Duty shifts where the driver claimed the exemption:
