The Agriculture Exemption feature simplifies workflows for drivers who meet the criteria for the FMCSA's 150 air-mile exemption rule for agricultural operations (§395.1(k)). This feature supports exempting drive time within 150 air-miles of configured Agriculture Sources, streamlining compliance and reducing manual log entries.
Administrators can configure and assign Agriculture Sources from the Samsara dashboard, either globally or by driver tag. Eligible drivers can then claim exemptions directly from the Samsara Driver App.
Before drivers can claim agricultural exemptions, admins must enable both Agriculture Exemption and Personal Conveyance (PC) for the driver profiles. For a detailed workflow on how to enable these options from the Samsara dashboard, see Enable Exemptions for Drivers.
Once the Agriculture Exemption is enabled, the driver defaults to Regulated status. This prevents disruptions if changes are made mid-shift.
Important
If a driver has any configured Agriculture Sources, they will be required to select one of their associated sources to claim the exemption. Their exempt status will depend on their location relative to that source's 150 air-mile radius.
If a driver with one or more configured sources is operating under a new, unconfigured source (i.e., a source not yet created in the dashboard), they can continue in Regulated status and switch to Personal Conveyance, add an appropriate remark, and manually track their distance to the source.
To configure the exemption zone, admins can create Agriculture Sources with a fixed 150 air-mile radius:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From within Fleet, select Address/Geofences.
-
Select + Add Address.
-
Enter the following Site Details:
-
Name: Drivers will see this source name in the Samsara Driver App.
-
Address: The address from which the app will auto-apply a fixed 150 air-mile radius.
-
Address Type: Select Agriculture Source.
-
(Optional) Tags: Add tags to assign sources to drivers.
When claiming the exemption in the app, drivers will see a list of their associated sources.
-
Drivers only see sources that match their tags or are assigned organization-wide.
-
If no tags are applied, the source is available to all drivers.
-
-
(Optional) Safety Even Exclusions: Choose to disable specific safety events in this geofence.
-
(Optional) Notes: Add internal notes.
-
-
Save site details.
You can Edit or Remove addresses as desired.
Drivers enabled with the Agriculture Exemption will see a banner at the top of the HoS tile in their Samsara Driver App. Once a vehicle is selected, drivers can claim and unclaim the exemption by tapping the banner.
The banner can reflect the following statuses.
|
Status |
Condition |
Driving Mode |
|---|---|---|
|
Regulated |
Driver is not claiming the exemption |
Drivers log drive time and duty statuses per normal operations |
|
Agriculture Exempt |
Driver claims the exemption and is within the 150 air-mile radius of their configured agriculture source |
Upon driving, drivers will be transitioned to PC and remain in that status until they unclaim the exemption, sign out, or leave the radius
|
|
Pending (Regulated) |
Driver is outside the 150 air-mile radius after claiming the exemption |
Drivers log drive time and duty statuses per normal operations
|
After tapping the banner, drivers can choose the Regulated or Agriculture Exemption status.
When drivers select the Agriculture Exemption in the Samsara Driver App, a list of their assigned Agriculture Sources will display. They must choose a source to claim the exemption.
If no sources are available (due to none being configured for the organization or their specific tag), drivers can freely claim or unclaim the exemption without radius tracking:
-
Agriculture Exemption: Movement of the vehicle will be identified as authorized personal use (PC) until the exemption is unclaimed or the driver logs out.
-
Regulated: Drivers log duty statuses per normal operations.
