The Heavy Haul Exemption, or U.S. Oversized Overweight Permit Exemption, grants relief from the 30-minute break requirement for drivers who have a government-issued permit to transport oversized and overweight loads.
Admins can enable the Heavy Haul Exemption for eligible drivers to help reduce road time and ensure shipments reach their destinations faster. Enabling this exemption can also improve safety by minimizing the need for drivers to stop in unsafe areas to avoid break-related citations. For details, see Enable Exemptions for Drivers.
After you enable the Heavy Haul Exemption for an eligible driver, the Samsara Driver App displays a custom shift dial and applies the exemption to the shift.
The Samsara Driver App provides the following driver experience for the Heavy Haul Exemption:
-
From the Daily Log, drivers can claim the exemption by tapping Heavy Haul Exemption and selecting the time within the shift to apply the exemption.
Once claimed, the Samsara Driver App will display the active exemption.
-
The exemption displays as a remark in the Daily Log and in the DOT Inspection log.
-
The Until break timer will display as an inactive dial, and the driver will not receive rest break alerts while the exemption is claimed.
-
Drivers can claim this exemption in addition to other rulesets, such as 16-Hour Short-Haul Exemption (Big Day) or Fleet Adverse Driving Exemptions.
Note
Claiming this exemption will not remove an existing violation.
