Personal Conveyance is a duty status for the US and Canada defined by the ELD mandate as Off Duty drive time while driving a commercial motor vehicle doing non-work related activities. In Canada, you can claim up to 46.5 miles (75 km) a day for Personal Conveyance.
To enforce the maximum distance allowed per day, you can enable Personal Conveyance Limits as part of your HOS Settings (Settings > Compliance). When this setting is enabled, Samsara enforces the following limits depending on region:
-
US: Prompts driver to transition out of Personal Conveyance and grays out a driver's ability to switch into Personal Conveyance when vehicle distance traveled under Personal Conveyance in a day is greater than 46.5 mi (75 km).
Note
Effective December 17th, 2024: Due to clarification from the FMCSA, U.S. drivers will no longer be automatically switched out of Personal Conveyance (PC) once the limit is reached. Instead, drivers will receive a prompt to manually change their status. Drivers can choose to remain in PC, but once the limit is exceeded and they transition out of PC, they cannot return to that duty status.
-
Canada: Automatically transition drivers from Personal Conveyance status to Driving status when vehicle distance traveled under Personal Conveyance in a day is greater than 46.5 mi (75 km).
The Samsara Driver App displays a prompt to alert drivers about the transition and drivers cannot edit their status to a non-driving status in the app. After reaching the daily allowance, drivers will not be able to select Personal Conveyance as a duty status for the rest of the day.
The ELD mandate requires that carriers be able to configure the availability of the Yard Move and Personal Conveyance special duty statuses on a per-driver basis. You can also apply the settings in bulk using the driver import process. After you enable the duty status, the Samsara Driver App displays the status tile as an available selection.

If you enable drivers to make use of the Personal Conveyance duty status, you may be concerned that drivers could stay in the Personal Conveyance status even in situations where an alternate status may be more appropriate. To help manage how drivers can utilize Personal Conveyance, Samsara enables you to enforce Personal Conveyance limits across your organization.
When Canada HOS is enabled in the Compliance settings, Personal Conveyance Auto-Duty Transition is automatically enabled for Canada. As this setting is mandatory in Canada it cannot be disabled for Canada.
-
(Canada only) Before you begin, ensure that you Enable Canada HOS.
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Select Compliance.
-
Enable Personal Conveyance Limits for any applicable regions.
Per the ELD Mandate, the Personal Conveyance and Yard Move duty status will be reset after an engine restart. When the ELD detects that the vehicle has stopped and the vehicle has had an ignition cycle where the engine is turned off and then turned back on, the ELD displays a prompt that provides the driver the option to stay in PC or YM.
If the driver takes no action within 300 seconds, the Samsara Driver App switches the driver’s status from Personal Conveyance to Off Duty. If the vehicle moves again, the driver is put into ELD Drive unless the driver selects the Personal Conveyance status in the app again.
When Canada HOS is enabled in the Compliance settings, the Personal Conveyance Auto-Duty Transition feature will automatically be enabled for Canada. As this setting is mandatory in Canada, it cannot be disabled for Canada. With this setting enabled, Samsara automatically transitions drivers to an On Duty Driving status when the driver exceeds the daily allowable Personal Conveyance driving distance.
Note
If the driver navigates away from the Samsara Driver App or closes it such that the app is no longer active, the prompt does not display. In this case, the driver must manually reselect PC to continue operating in PC status. We recommend training drivers to always make sure they select PC or YM after any engine restart event.
