If your fleet has vehicles that do not require an ELD under applicable regulations, these vehicles may be eligible for Unregulated Vehicle mode.
In commercial fleets, tracking driver activity is essential for ensuring compliance, safety, and operational efficiency. Depending on whether a vehicle is regulated (subject to the ELD mandate) or unregulated (exempt from the ELD mandate), the methods for tracking a driver's status and duty times can differ significantly. The following list outlines the distinctions between driver tracking for regulated and unregulated vehicles.
-
Regulated vehicles:
-
Auto-Duty tracking: When a driver signs in and operates a regulated vehicle, Samsara automatically tracks the driver's activity, providing you a clear and comprehensive view of the driver’s day.
-
Driving status: While the vehicle is in motion, the driver’s status is automatically set to Driving. When the vehicle stops, the status shifts to On Duty.
-
Off Duty: Drivers are unable to switch to Off Duty via the app. To go Off Duty at the end of their shift, they must use the Kisok Mode from the Driver Portal.
-
-
Unregulated vehicles:
-
Auto Duty status: ELD functionality and auto-duty status is disabled for unregulated vehicles. When a driver signs in and operates an unregulated vehicle, they remain in Off Duty status since auto-duty tracking is not enabled. However, the driver can still manually select a duty status within the Samsara Driver App.
-
Manual On and Off Duty tracking: If your fleet requires tracking of On Duty time, drivers can manually toggle between On Duty and Off Duty using the Kisok Mode from the Driver Portal.
-
Unassigned driving alert trigger regardless of the regulation type. To disable this alert for a vehicle, remove the vehicle from the Alert Configuration.
Admins can Configure the Vehicle Regulation Mode to Mixed-Use from the Samsara dashboard to enable drivers to toggle between Regulated Driving and Unregulated Driving directly from the Samsara Driver App. This setting applies to vehicles that are typically not subject to the ELD mandate, but may become subject to the requirement under certain conditions, such as when a trailer is added and the total combined weight of the vehicle exceeds 10,001 pounds.
To view how drivers can switch between Unregulated and Regulated driving from the Samsara Driver App, see Vehicle Regulation Modes for Mixed-Use Vehicles.
To configure the Vehicle Regulation Mode, select the mode from the vehicle settings or use the following workflow:
-
From Fleet Overview ( ) > Assets > Vehicles, locate or search for the vehicle from the vehicle list.
-
Confirm that the vehicle has not been driving for at least 5 minutes to allow the last regulated trip segment to be processed through Auto-Duty (for more information, see Automatically Update Driver Status (Auto-Duty)).
-
Click the more actions ( ••• ) menu > Settings.
-
Locate the Vehicle Regulation Mode and select the mode (Unregulated (non-CMV), Regulated, or Mixed-Use).
-
Save to confirm the setting.
