A Yard Move is considered a special driving category by FMCSA. During a Yard Move, the ELD will record a drivers' status as On Duty Not Driving when the vehicle is below a speed threshold of 20 mph (United States) or 32 km/h (Canada).
Under the applicable regulations, a carrier must have the ability to preconfigure driver accounts with the Yard Move status on a per-driver basis. Should a carrier opt to preconfigure a driver's account with yard moves, the driver must select the beginning and end of the yard move period.

If you allow drivers to make use of the Yard Move duty status, you may be concerned that drivers could stay in the Yard Move status even in situations where the Drive status may be more appropriate. To help manage how drivers can utilize Yard Move, Samsara has a Yard Move Auto Transition setting to restrict the usage of Yard Move to the speed threshold.
This setting will automatically switch drivers from Yard Move to ELD Drive if the vehicle exceeds the speed threshold. The Samsara Driver App will display a prompt to alert drivers about the transition and restrict drivers from editing their status to a non-driving status in the app.
When Canada HOS is enabled in the Compliance settings, Yard Move Auto-Duty Transition is automatically enabled for Canada. As this setting is mandatory in Canada it cannot be disabled for Canada.
Even though it is not required for the US ELD mandate, you can also enforce this functionality for drivers in the US.
Per the ELD Mandate, the Personal Conveyance and Yard Move duty status will be reset after an engine restart. When the ELD detects that the vehicle has stopped and the vehicle has had an ignition cycle where the engine is turned off and then turned back on, the ELD displays a prompt that provides the driver the option to stay in PC or YM.
If the driver takes no action within 300 seconds, the Samsara Driver App switches the driver’s status from Yard Move to On Duty. If the vehicle moves again, the driver is put into ELD Drive unless the driver selects the Yard Move status in the app again.
Note
If the driver navigates away from the Samsara Driver App or closes it such that the app is no longer active, the prompt does not display. In this case, the driver must manually reselect YM to continue operating in YM status. We recommend training drivers to always make sure they select PC or YM after any engine restart event.
