You can configure your Samsara dual-facing dash cam, such as the CM32 or CM34 dash cam, to use Camera ID to automatically assign drivers to vehicles using inward-facing dash cam footage and advanced machine learning. With Camera ID, Samsara automatically attributes an unassigned driver to a vehicle, trip, or harsh event for powerful driver-based insights.
Camera ID can begin assigning drivers automatically after at least one training image is associated with each driver. Training images can be added manually or automatically when a driver is assigned to a trip that includes a Camera ID image. The system compares captured facial features to the training images and assigns the closest match, following the driver assignment hierarchy.
For best results and to configure your Camera ID driver associations, refer to the following topics:
Training the camera ensures accuracy when lighting, body pose, outfits, or other attributes change. Camera ID begins to auto-detect drivers after the first manual assignment. Camera ID takes time to learn who drivers are so you may not get an accurate driver suggestion for every segment.
To ensure accurate detection:
-
Ensure each driver has at least 10 high-quality training images, added manually or through other assignment methods. Images should vary in lighting and angle to improve recognition accuracy.
-
Perform manual assignments and correct any inaccurate driver assignments.
-
Perform manual assignment for changes of driver appearance, such as differences to hairstyle, facial hair, hats, and glasses.
After Camera ID is configured, the system collects facial images and builds training profiles using manual assignments and driver assignments made in other parts of the Samsara dashboard. If a trip includes a Camera ID image, assigning a driver in the Trip History Report, Safety Inbox, or any other area where driver assignment is available adds that image to the driver’s training profile.
Automatic Camera ID assignments are shown in the following areas when a matching face is detected:
-
Trip data in the Trip History Report, the Fuel & Energy Report, or the Driver Efficiency Report.
-
Video requested through the Video Retrieval Process.
-
Safety events in the Safety Inbox.
Samsara uses hierarchy logic to determine which driver to assign to the vehicle. For example, an HOS driver assignment takes priority over a Camera ID driver assignment. For more information on assignment logic, see Driver-to-Vehicle Assignment Hierarchy and Priorities.
Before you enable and configure Camera ID settings:
-
Review Camera ID Driver Consent. Laws in certain US states and EU member states may require you to get explicit written consent from your drivers before you enable this feature. For more information on facial recognition data management see Facial Recognition Privacy and Data Retention .
-
Review the recommendations for mounting positions and verify the inward-facing camera is installed properly to reduce glare with a clear, unobstructed view of the driver.
-
Ensure that the driver list and driver profiles are current.
Before you enable Camera ID to automatically detect drivers, review the Camera ID Prerequisites.
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From Fleet, select Driver Assignment.
-
Enable the Camera ID setting.
-
Select the box and then Confirm to acknowledge Camera ID consent.
-
Select Driver Assignment type:
-
Automatic Driver Assignment: Drivers are auto-assigned when the similarity score is 95% or higher. If the score is between 80–95%, a suggested driver is shown. No assignment is made below 80% similarity.
Samsara recommends enabling this mode only after drivers have first been manually assigned to trips and their profiles are trained with at least 10 images captured in varied lighting and angles to ensure optimal assignment accuracy.
-
Manual Driver Confirmation Only: Driver suggestions are surfaced if Camera ID returns a facial match of 96% or higher. Admins must accept or reject each suggestion manually.
-
-
Save your changes.
-
To begin training the dash cam, assign dash cam segments to drivers (see Use Manual Assignment to Train Driver Recognition (Camera ID)).
The data for Camera ID is securely stored and protected in line with all of our other Samsara cloud data. Our cloud service is designed to meet the requirements of security-sensitive and privacy-sensitive organizations. Samsara does not disclose the personal information we process on behalf of customers, including Camera ID facial recognition information, outside of Samsara other than for the limited purposes described in our Terms of Service.
Camera ID facial recognition information is used only to assign drivers to trips within their own organization and to improve our services.
Even if you are not actively using Camera ID to assign drivers, biometric data may still be collected from all drivers with active inward-facing dash cams. To remain compliant, ensure driver consent is obtained where legally required.
If Camera ID is turned off, all associated training images and biometric data are automatically deleted from Samsara systems after 184 days.
