-
If you have not already done so, install the Vehicle Gateway (VG).
See Vehicle Gateway (VG) Installation Guides by Cable to review the installation guide that corresponds with your vehicle’s VG diagnostics cable. Pause the VG installation when you reach the step related to plugging in accessory devices and continue with the instructions.
-
Choose an installation location to mount the Panic Button:
-
Select a flat, non-porous surface such as rigid plastic, glass, or metal. Avoid fabric surfaces, as they do not provide a secure mounting base.
-
Ensure the Panic Button is not installed over airbags or other critical safety features. Additionally, verify that cable routing will not interfere with these components.
-
Consider the proximity to the VG. The Panic Button cable is ~7.5 feet (2.3 meters) long, so choose a location that allows for clean and unobstructed cable routing to the gateway.
-
-
Clean the mounting surface.
Wipe the install surface with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove any dust and other contaminants.
-
Mount the device.
-
Remove the red liner on the VHB adhesive by using the pull tab.
-
Firmly press the device into the intended install location for at least 30 seconds. Make sure adhesive is compressed evenly across the device.
-
-
Route the Panic Button cable to the VG.
Tuck the cable under the windshield's glass seal, or tuck it into the seal along the A pillar, making sure the placement does not interfere with any vehicle safety systems, such as airbags.
-
For customers currently utilizing VG EN auxiliary inputs: Before starting the installation process for the panic button, remove any auxiliary input currently connected to the Input 1 wire on the VG cable, as it will interfere with the Panic Button signal. Move any existing input to the Input 2 wire instead.
For more information about the VG auxiliary input wires, see Auxiliary Inputs for VGs and AGs.
-
Connect the Panic Button to the VG.
-
Disconnect the VG molex connector and connect the male end of the panic button connector to the VG while re-attaching the female to the original VG connector cable.
-
For best results, the cable should not wrap around the gateway or cross the diagnostics cable.
-
-
After you install a panic button, ensure drivers are familiar with the panic button’s location and operation.
It is recommended to conduct periodic reviews to verify the button remains in a practical position and hasn’t been obstructed or forgotten over time.
-
Proceed to Configure a Panic Button.
When you configure a Panic Button, you can configure a real-time alert notification to include a Panic Button event report. If you also have dash cams deployed in your vehicles, Samsara also automatically uploads the dash cam video for review with the incident.
You can configure the Aux Input Type for the Panic Button on a single gateway through the dashboard, or configure multiple gateways at once using a CSV file. For bulk updates, see Edit Gateways in Bulk.
To configure the Panic Button and set your alert options:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From the Devices settings, select Gateways and locate the vehicle where you installed the Panic Button
-
Select the more actions ( ••• ) menu > Settings.
-
Under Aux Input Type for Input Number 1, select Panic Button.
-
Save the setting changes.
-
Set up security alerts for panic button events.
Note
To configure and receive alerts, you must have the required permissions as described in Samsara Panic Button.
See Alert Triggers for information on available alert settings and Create an Alert Configuration (Alerts v 2.0) for information on how to set up the alert.
Samsara displays a red alert banner in Fleet Overview when a driver pushes the panic button. This alert remains for 24 hours unless dismissed. Samsara also automatically captures the dash cam video when you have a dash cam installed in your vehicles.
