To support the transition of fleets to alternative fuels beyond diesel and gasoline, Samsara created the Fuel Types feature (Settings ( ) > Fleet > Fuel & Energy > Fuel Types), which enables you to set custom fuel cost and emissions factor by fuel type. In Fuel Types you can also view a log of fuel history and override fuel type based on vehicle VIN for more accurate reporting.
Fuel Types is divided into three sections:
-
Fuel Types: Groups vehicles by fuel type and displays cost and CO2 emissions per type of fuel.
-
Fuel Type History: A log that details the past changes to cost and CO2 emissions.
-
Edit Individual Vehicles: Enables you to edit individual vehicles for engine or fuel type. For customers in North America, this section also enables you to edit IFTA reporting fuel type.
The Fuel Types table displays all fuel types of the vehicles in your organization, plus any fuel types you previously had in your fleet with custom fuel cost or emissions factors. The Fuel Types table also enables you to customize your fuel cost and emissions factors.
The Fuel Types table includes the following fuel details of your fleet:
|
Field |
Description |
|---|---|
|
Type |
Type of fuel. For example, Gasoline, Diesel, Biodiesel, or Electricity. This fuel type is relevant in our Fuel & Energy reports, and across the Samsara dashboard, with exception to the IFTA Report (applicable for organizations in North America). |
|
Cost |
Fuel price for the associated fuel type, per gallon or liter. Default indicates the national average of the cost of a gallon or liter fuel. The national average is updated weekly. In the U.S., Samsara uses data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Custom indicates the cost was set by an admin, and what that cost is. Custom costs affect future estimates and will not affect historical estimates. You can see a log of past custom fuel cost changes in the Fuel Type History. |
|
CO2 Emissions |
Emissions factor of the fuel type in kilograms per gallon or liter. Default indicates the emissions factor is calculated with a predefined carbon emissions factor fuel type. Custom indicates the cost was set by an admin, and what that cost is. Custom costs affect future estimates and will not affect historical estimates. You can see a log of past custom fuel cost changes in the Fuel Type History. |
|
Vehicles |
Number of vehicles in your fleet with the respective fuel type. |
To customize the Cost (per gal or per liter) and CO2 Emissions (kg/gal or kg/l), Edit the respective fuel type row.
You can View history to display a Fuel Type History log of past changes to fuel cost and CO2 emissions. This helps you review what cost and emissions factors were set in the past.
To filter for specific fuel types, use the Fuel Types drop-down menu.
The Fuel Types History log includes the following fuel details of your fleet:
|
Field |
Description |
|---|---|
|
Date |
The date the custom fuel cost or emissions factor was set. The time zone is based on your time zone, not the default organization time zone. |
|
Fuel Type |
Type of fuel. For example, Gasoline, Diesel, Biodiesel, or Electricity. This fuel type is relevant in our Fuel & Energy reports, and across the Samsara dashboard, with exception to the IFTA Report (applicable for organizations in North America). |

Edit Individual Vehicles enables you to review all your vehicles and ensure the automatically detected engine, fuel, and IFTA fuel types (if applicable) are correct. You can also override your vehicles with fuel types that cannot be automatically detected (for example, Biodiesel) for more accurate cost and emissions reporting.
Current unsupported fuel types include Methanol (M100), CNG, LNG, LPG, RNG, and FCEV. Any unsupported fuel types will behave as gasoline vehicles for fuel cost and carbon emissions estimations. Once support is added, they will appear in the Fuel Types table with associated cost and CO2 emissions factor.
To update the Engine Type, Fuel Type, or IFTA Fuel Type (if applicable) of an individual vehicle, select Edit in the respective vehicle row.
To update multiple vehicles in bulk with the same engine types, fuel types, or IFTA fuel types (if applicable), select the box of the corresponding vehicles and then click Edit in the blue banner that appears at the top of the table.
Once the engine or fuel type(s) are adjusted, future reports will use these new fuel costs or CO2 emissions factor for these vehicles.
You can filter the table by Tags, Engine Type, Fuel Type, IFTA Fuel Type (if applicable), and the Make, Model, or Year of a vehicle.
In some cases the Fuel Type or IFTA Fuel Type (as applicable) is Unknown or Unspecified. You can filter for these Unknown or Unspecified fuel types in the Fuel Type and IFTA Fuel Type filters, respectively, and manually correct the fuel type(s). Any unsupported fuel types will behave as gasoline vehicles for fuel cost and carbon emissions estimations.
The Edit Individual Vehicles table includes the following details of your fleet:
|
Field |
Description |
|---|---|
|
Vehicle |
The name of the vehicle. |
|
Engine Type |
Type of engine the vehicle use. Automatic indicates the type was automatically recognized based on the vehicle VIN. |
|
Fuel Type |
Type of fuel. For example, Gasoline, Diesel, Biodiesel, or Electricity. This fuel type is relevant in our Fuel & Energy reports, and across the Samsara dashboard, with exception to the IFTA Report (applicable for organizations in North America). Automatic indicates the type was automatically recognized based on the vehicle VIN. |
|
IFTA Fuel Type |
For organizations in North America, this is the fuel type displayed on the IFTA Report and Fuel Purchases Report. |
|
Tags |
Tags assigned to the vehicle. |
You can also export the information into a CSV (more actions ( ••• ) menu in the upper right-hand corner > Download CSV).
