-
Before you begin:
-
Gather the equipment and tools:
-
If you have a previously installed dash cam, remove your existing equipment or follow our recommended steps to Remove an Installed Dash Cam.
-
Ensure your Vehicle Gateway (VG) is installed and activated, and activate your dash cam. Visit https://cloud.samsara.com/activate or follow the guided instructions in the Samsara Fleet App to complete activation.
-
-
Identify a mounting location. For optimal visibility:
-
Choose a location with clear glass, avoiding areas with black coating or dot patterns.
-
Position the device below the rear view mirror, within the windshield wiper sweep. Refer to specific mounting tips for US and UK.
-
If utilizing AI event detection features, follow the Dash Cam Position Recommendations and AI Detection Best Practices.
-
Ensure there is adequate clearance for Allen key access on both sides of the device.
-
-
Thoroughly clean the windshield mounting surface and any areas where you plan to install a cable clip.
-
To prepare the windshield mounting surface and any areas intended for cable clip installation, use the provided alcohol wipe to remove any residual cleaner residue. If further cleaning is needed, use a lint-free cloth with alcohol that is 70% or greater in concentration.
-
To ensure the dash cam securely adheres to your window:
-
Make sure the surface is completely dry. Allow all alcohol residue to evaporate fully before installation, and remove any condensation. Wiping the windshield with a clean, lint-free cloth can speed up drying.
-
Install the dash cam only when temperatures are above 50°F (10°C). In colder conditions, use the vehicle’s windshield defroster or a heat gun to help the adhesive bond effectively for a secure installation.
-
-
(Optional) For an angled windshield, install angled window mount ACC-CM-BSHIM (not included) onto the camera.
-
Adhere the dash cam to the windshield. Peel off the adhesive liner and firmly press the camera against the windshield for at least 30 seconds.
Note
Apply pressure quickly and in one motion. The adhesive is single-use only, and after adhered, the dash cam cannot be repositioned. To purchase a replacement mount, order SKU ACC-CM-BMNT from the Webstore or contact your Account Executive or Customer Success Manager.
-
Inspect the installation from the outside of the vehicle for proper adhesion. A lighter surface indicates area where the adhesive has not fully bonded to the windshield.
Tip
To remove any bubbles, use a flat-head screwdriver or small pry tool in the center of the backside of the mount to press out the bubbles.
-
Prepare and position the camera lens(es).
-
Remove the protective film from the inward-facing lens (CM34 model only) and the road-facing camera lens.
-
Use the larger end (size M3 hex) of the Allen key to loosen both mount screws before adjusting. Rotate the camera body so it hangs perfectly vertical, then lightly tighten the screws. Do not fully tighten until you confirm camera positioning later in this workflow.
-
(CM34 Only) Use the smaller end (size M2 hex) of the Allen key to loosen the inward-facing camera screw. Angle the lens toward the center of the cabin, then lightly tighten the screw. Do not fully tighten until you confirm camera positioning later in this workflow.
-
-
Connect the dash cam.
-
Run the cable across the top of the windshield.
Secure using cable clips or tuck the cable under the glass seal around the windshield.
-
Plug the camera into the USB port on the Vehicle Gateway.
For best results, do not wrap the cable around the Vehicle Gateway or route across the diagnostics cable.
-
-
Complete the installation.
-
Turn the vehicle on.
-
Verify installation:
-
Samsara dashboard: See Test Dash Cam Positioning
-
Samsara Fleet App: See Streamline Hardware Installation with the Samsara Fleet App
If all points of interest are not captured (see the following example), use the provided Allen key to loosen the camera before re-adjusting. After all points of interest are captured, use the Allen keys to tighten both mount locking screws and, if applicable, the inward camera locking screw. Do not overtighten.
Note
You may need to take a short trip for the camera to begin recording. A trip is registered when the vehicle reaches 5 mph (8 km/h).
-
-
(Optional) To install the dash cam on multiple identical vehicles in the same position, use the increment lines as a reference. Align the increment line on the bracket with the alignment line on the dash cam to replicate its angle. For the CM34, align the increment line on the driver-facing lens to replicate the driver-facing angle.
