If you suspect a Samsara Vehicle Gateway is causing unsafe or unexpected vehicle behavior, prioritize safety. This article is for fleet administrators, technicians, and drivers. It explains when to stop operating the vehicle, when to unplug the gateway, how to recognize overheating, what to document, when to run controlled tests, and how to work with fleet maintenance and Samsara Support.
Caution
Do not continue driving when safety-related or drivability-related warnings are present. If the vehicle is smoking, overheating, or showing unsafe electrical behavior, keep it powered down and have a qualified technician inspect it before you reconnect the gateway or restore power.
Unexpected behavior after a Vehicle Gateway install can include dashboard warnings, fault codes, loss of drivability, limp mode, derate, erratic gauges, a locked starter, or other electrical issues. If you suspect the gateway is involved:
-
Stop operating the vehicle until you understand the issue.
-
Unplug the Vehicle Gateway immediately. Unplugging is a temporary diagnostic and safety step that can stop symptoms while you investigate.
-
Keep the gateway disconnected until diagnostics are complete or Support and technicians advise next steps.
After you unplug the gateway, note the time you disconnected it and confirm whether the symptoms stop, improve, or persist. Keep any suspect gateway out of service until diagnostics and Support review are complete.
An overheating or thermal event needs the same immediate response—unplug the gateway and stop using it—with extra care before the unit returns to service. Watch for these signs:
-
The gateway feels unusually hot to the touch.
-
Smells, smoke, or shutdowns from the gateway or nearby wiring.
-
Vehicle electrical issues, such as dashboard lights or operational anomalies, at the same time.
Do not reconnect or reuse a gateway involved in an overheating or thermal event until it has been reviewed or replaced. Record thermal details in your documentation, including any damage to other property or injuries associated with the event.
Complete, accurate documentation helps fleet maintenance and Samsara Support diagnose the issue quickly. Collect the following, as applicable.
Vehicle and gateway:
-
Year, make, model, engine model, and vehicle identification number (VIN).
-
Vehicle or asset name, or equipment serial number.
-
Vehicle Gateway serial number.
-
Cable SKU from the shrink-tubed end (for example, CBL-VG-XXXX).
Timeline:
-
Date and time the gateway was installed.
-
When symptoms began, and whether they started immediately after installation.
-
When you unplugged the gateway, and whether symptoms changed afterward.
Symptoms and drivability:
-
Dashboard lights or warnings (for example, ABS, check engine, or sensor warnings).
-
Exact fault, misfire, or derate codes from diagnostic scans.
-
Drivability symptoms, such as loss of power, limp mode, chugging, RPM drop, unresponsive throttle, cranks but will not start, stuck in park, or starter locked.
-
Whether the vehicle was operable or unsafe to drive.
-
Whether symptoms stop, improve, or persist when the gateway is unplugged, and whether safety-critical warnings remain even when it is disconnected.
-
Whether symptoms return if the gateway is reconnected for a test (only under guidance).
Diagnostics and photos:
-
Electronic control module (ECM) or vehicle diagnostic scan results, mechanic work orders, and OEM or dealership inspection reports.
-
Photos of the dashboard warnings, the installation (gateway, serial label, cable connections, and diagnostic port), and any thermal or equipment damage.
Other devices, modifications, and power:
-
Third-party devices connected in parallel (wheelchair lifts, power take-off (PTO), immobilizers, telematics splitters, or aftermarket modules), or anything plugged into the gateway USB port.
-
Aftermarket modifications or non-factory ECM settings.
-
Whether the gateway is powered from ECM power or other wiring.
-
Whether the device was tampered with or submerged in water before the event.
Tests and LED status:
-
Whether another gateway was tested on this vehicle, and the result.
-
Whether this gateway was tested on another vehicle, and whether the issue followed it.
-
Whether a known-good cable was tested, and whether warnings returned.
-
Gateway LED color and status before and during the issue. For LED meanings, see Troubleshoot by VG LED State.
-
Whether the gateway was power-cycled, and whether behavior changed.
Test only when it is safe, and typically under guidance from fleet maintenance or Support. Unplug the gateway and confirm the vehicle is in a safe state before any test. Do not operate the vehicle if safety-critical warnings or drivability issues are present.
-
Gateway swap on the same vehicle: Install a known-good Vehicle Gateway on the affected vehicle. If it does not reproduce the issue, treat the original unit as suspect and keep it out of service.
-
Cable swap: Connect the same gateway with a known-good compatible Samsara cable. If the warning lights do not return, the original cable is likely faulty and should be replaced.
-
Gateway on another vehicle: Connect the suspect gateway to another compatible vehicle where Samsara equipment is known to work. If the issue follows the gateway, the gateway is likely faulty.
-
Power-cycle: Unplug the gateway for about 15 minutes, reconnect it firmly to the cable and diagnostic port, then drive about 20 minutes so it can restart and reconnect. Note whether behavior changes.
Record which gateway or cable was used, the vehicles involved, and whether warnings or symptoms returned during each test. For related connectivity and diagnostic checks, see Vehicle Gateway (VG) Device Health: Definitions and Troubleshooting and Missing or Incorrect VG Diagnostic Data.
If dashboard warnings, fault codes, or drivability issues persist with the gateway unplugged, involve your fleet maintenance team or a qualified mechanic to inspect the vehicle and run diagnostic scans. Share the full symptom history, timing, and scan results so they can assess vehicle-side causes, such as the ECM or wiring.
Contact Samsara Support when you suspect the gateway or cable is related to faults, overheating, or unexpected behavior, especially if unplugging the gateway changes the symptoms. Have ready:
-
Your organization name and the email you use to sign in to the Samsara dashboard.
-
The gateway serial number or numbers.
-
The vehicle asset number, if assigned.
-
The installation location and a callback phone number.
Provide the full incident documentation you collected. Support may escalate to hardware engineering or diagnostics to review device data and advise next steps.
If Support determines that a Vehicle Gateway or cable is defective, they may recommend a warranty replacement. Before you request one, prepare:
-
Device serial numbers for each gateway.
-
A contact name and email.
-
The VIN for each vehicle that will receive a replacement, so cables can be matched to each vehicle.
-
The full shipping address.
Support may also ask whether each unit was power-cycled or tested in another vehicle, what LED behavior it shows, and for examples of devices that are installed but not appearing in your Samsara dashboard.
If a warranty exchange is approved, you generally do not need to return the faulty device. You may dispose of it after the replacement arrives, and confirm receipt if Support requests it. Keep any suspect gateway out of service and do not reinstall it until Support or your maintenance team confirms it is safe.
