Note
This feature is available to fleets in both the United States and Canada.
The Locked Driving Screen helps reduce distractions and supports driver safety by limiting in-app interactions while a vehicle is moving. Once the vehicle exceeds 5 mph, the Samsara Driver App automatically switches to a simplified view that highlights only essential driving information.
While the vehicle is in motion, the Locked Driving Screen prevents drivers from leaving the driving view in the Samsara Driver App. The screen transitions to the following minimal display as soon as the app detects that the driver has entered Driving status:
Drivers will still have access to the normal prompts and alerts that they would otherwise receive when the driving screen is not locked, such as new message and HOS violation alerts. The lock applies only to in-app features within the Samsara Driver App. Drivers can still leave the app entirely and use other applications, such as navigation apps.
Note
The following outlines how the in-app Commercial Navigation behaves when used alongside the locked driving screen:
- In-app navigation open with no active route: When the vehicle starts moving, the system automatically displays the driving screen. The driver cannot return to the in-app navigation screen until the vehicle stops.
-
In-app navigation open with an active route: The in-app navigation screen stays visible while the vehicle is in motion. It remains in front until the route ends or the driver manually exits it.
If the driver taps away from the in-app navigation while driving, the system switches to the driving screen, but a route banner remains at the top and voice guidance continues. Tapping the banner, even when the driving screen is locked, returns the driver to navigation.
When the driver is in Rest status, the app will display a dial with the amount of Off Duty time taken and timers for shift and cycle resets.
Follow this workflow to enable screen locking when motion is detected:
- Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
- From Fleet, select Compliance.
-
Enable Lock driving screen when in motion (GPS).
This setting automatically locks the driving screen based on the mobile device's GPS, independent of VG connection.
