The Alberta Hours of Service (HOS) Ruleset provides compliance support for fleets operating within Alberta. It applies to commercial carriers who use the following vehicle types:
-
Commercial Trucks or Trailers (by Weight): Vehicles or combinations with a registered or actual gross weight of 11,794 kg (26,000 lbs) or more
-
Passenger Vehicles: Vehicles designed to carry 11 or more passengers, including the driver
Important
Alberta HOS has different driving, on-duty, and break requirements than Canada HOS. To align with applicable HOS requirements, you should enable the Alberta HOS ruleset for all drivers operating within the province.
Enable the Alberta HOS Ruleset for multiple drivers by doing a CSV upload to Add or Edit Drivers in Bulk and setting the Alberta HOS field to TRUE for every driver operating in Alberta.
To enable the ruleset for an individual driver, follow this workflow:
When the Alberta HOS Ruleset is enabled for a driver, the following daily driving and duty hour limits are automatically applied:
-
Minimum Rest Before Starting a Shift: Drivers may begin a shift only after taking eight consecutive hours off duty.
-
Maximum Driving Time Per Shift: Drivers may drive for up to 13 total hours after their last eight consecutive hours off duty.
-
Total On-Duty Time Limit: Drivers may remain on duty for a maximum of 15 total hours following their last eight consecutive hours off duty.
-
Required Breaks During Driving: Drivers must take a ten-minute break after four hours or less of driving, or a 30-minute break after driving between four and up to six hours.
Drivers using the Alberta HOS ruleset can reduce their off-duty period to as few as four hours if all of the following conditions are met:
-
Maximum Duration of the Last Shift: The previous shift was 15 hours or less.
-
Frequency of Reduction Allowance: The driver applied this reduction only once in the last seven days.
-
Length of the Next Rest Period: The driver’s next off-duty period equals eight hours plus the deferred time (for example, if they reduced their last rest period to four hours, their next rest must be 12 hours).
If a driver is not eligible to reduce their off-duty time, the Samsara Driver App will display a message indicating the reason.
Drivers who have been assigned the Alberta HOS Ruleset can claim the following exemptions in their Samsara Driver App:
-
Adverse Driving Exemption: Allows drivers to drive up to two additional hours in certain circumstances, such as in adverse weather or unforeseen traffic conditions. This reduces the driver's two hour daily off-duty requirement.
-
Shift Reset Reduction: Allows drivers to defer up to four of the eight required off-duty hours for a shift reset. The deferred hours are then added to the next shift reset.
-
Safety Exemption: Allows for unlimited driving time when the driver, vehicle, or cargo is in danger.
-
Oil Well Exemption: Allows Canadian drivers of oil well service vehicles with a valid permit to operate without adhering to normal cycle limits
