This article outlines a known issue with GEN2 VDO tachographs that occurs when an expired company card has been used, potentially causing a failure in remote downloads. The issue is hardware-specific and cannot be resolved via the Samsara platform.
Remote downloads from one or multiple GEN2 VDO tachographs stop working after an expired company card has been used. Often multiple vehicle gateways stop downloading around the same time.
The issue is caused by a GEN2 VDO tachograph malfunction when a company card expires while inserted, or an expired card is inserted. This is due to a bug in the tachograph firmware and is unrelated to the Samsara platform.
If your tachograph is affected, follow the steps below to resolve the issue and prevent future occurrences.
-
To prevent the issue: Regularly check the expiry date of your company card.
-
Request a replacement card in advance of the current card’s expiration.
-
Remove the old company card from the reader before its expiry date.
-
Insert the new card the day after the old one expires to resume remote downloads and recover any missed files.
-
If downloads have already stopped, visit an approved tachograph workshop to update the tachograph firmware to version 4.0F, as advised by VDO.
Note
There may be a cost associated with the firmware update, so it's best to avoid the issue through proactive card management.
