The Safety Overview (Safety ( )) displays key fleet safety data and provides insight into high-level safety and coaching trends that impact your fleet safety scores, including driver behavior insights, performance by organizational tags, and risk factor trends.
The Safety Overview is divided into the following sections:
-
Your Safety Actions: Highlights unresolved behaviors that require coaching including past due events, new events to review, events with unassigned drivers, and upcoming sessions.
-
Fleet Safety Score Trends and Behavior Insights: Displays changes to the fleet safety score over time and highlights the main contributing behaviors to the safety rating of your fleet.
-
Risk Factors: Provides detail for safety events and behaviors that affect the safety score.
-
Driver Performance: Compare safety scores by driver or vehicle to analyze your safety score metrics and view driver safety top and bottom performers.
-
Driver Coaching: Provides a summary of coaching behaviors including Coaching Timeliness Report, Coaching Effectiveness Report, and Event Resolution Report.
For report management and display options, reference the following topics:
From the Safety Overview, you can Schedule a Report (Safety Overview > more actions ( ... )) or export the following reports into a CSV or XLSX file format (Safety Overview > Export):

By default, the Safety Overview provides your fleet safety data over the past 30 days. To refine the data displayed, you can utilize the following report display options:
-
Minimum Distance Filter: Filter out low-mileage drivers on the Driver Performance card and Driver Performance Report. This helps focus on performance data that matters most, as low-distance drivers often skew results with scores that are either 0 or 100. The filter defaults to 5 miles Min Distance (or 10 km) and retains the selected value across the Safety Overview and Driver Performance Report pages for consistency. Selecting No Minimum Distance will display all drivers, regardless of distance driven.
Note
This filter impacts only the drivers visible in the user interface and does not alter safety score calculations.
-
Modify Date Range: Use the date selector to change the time range displayed, up to a maximum duration of one year.
-
View by Driver or Vehicle: Analyze the distribution of safety scores across your fleet (see also Score Distribution by Driver or Vehicle).
-
View Assigned Tags: Use specific vehicle or driver Tags to filter the displayed data. For example, if you have a tag associated with a drivers and vehicles based out of a specific distribution hub, you use that tag to filter the data.
-
Tag Comparison: Select up to ten tags to display a comparative analysis of the safety metrics. For more information, see Tag Comparison.
For a comparative analysis of the safety metrics, you can select multiple tags. Select up to ten tags to view in the report.
Note
If the tag has nested tags within it, the report displays the top and bottom performing tag groups. If there are no nested tags, the report displays the top and bottom performing drivers or vehicles.
The safety summary updates to include drivers and vehicles with the selected tags including the following Safety Overview sections:
-
Safety Score: The safety graph and safety metrics update for each selected tag. A light blue dotted line indicates the average score for the entire fleet.
-
Risk Factors: The table lists all selected tags for a single risk factor at a time. Toggle the risk factor menu to navigate between risk factors.
Expand (
) each tag to view the event counts, rate, and score for each behavior in that risk factor. Select View Report to view the individual risk factor report for the behavior category.
-
Driver Performance: The table displays performance metrics to reflect only drivers assigned with the selected tags. The By driver table displays the ranking of drivers with the assigned tags.
After an event is updated, the associated data refreshes in the Safety Overview based on when the safety event occurred. See the table below for a summary.
Event Time Period |
Expected Latency |
---|---|
Less than 2 days ago |
Up to 6 hours |
Greater than 2 days and less than 3 months ago |

The Safety Overview and safety reports use the definition of a trip to calculate the total drive time:
A trip is defined as traveling from a starting point to a stop or destination. A trip begins when your vehicle achieves a speed of at least 5mph and ends when the vehicle speed remains below 5mph for 5 minutes or when your vehicle crosses a state or national border.
Samsara recommends that you inform your drivers that certain data collected about their driving will be used to calculate a Safety Score and recommends that you provide drivers with materials about the Safety Score configuration and calculation specific to your organization. Safety Scores should be used primarily for coaching and training purposes and to help build a safety culture within your organization. Employment decisions including, but not limited to, those involving hiring, termination, compensation, and route and hours assignments should never be based on Safety Scores alone and should always only be one data point for an employment decision that is ultimately made by a supervisor or other employee.
