Samsara's route tracking feature allows for route plans to be monitored in real-time as a driver or vehicle executes those route plans.
It enables fleets to have a reliable system for completing deliveries and services. Additionally, it helps fleets determine the performance and efficiency of a route.
What is a Samsara Route?
A Samsara Route is a trip that has a start point with a set of stops to be completed. Each stop on a route can have its own arrival and departure time.

How Does a Route Get Tracked?
Routes are tracked by GPS location from the vehicles traveling along the created route.
A Route is considered "started" when the vehicle leaves the geofence from the start location and stays outside of the geofence for 2 consecutive minutes. A Route will "end" when the vehicle enters the last geofence stop.

Our Route Tracking allows drivers a window for early/late arrivals to route stops during a route. Each route has its own tracking window. The window will allow the route to start tracking 1hr before the scheduled start time and provides an additional 6hrs after the route's scheduled end time to complete all stops within a route. The route's scheduled end time is defined as one hour after the last stop's scheduled arrival time. Here is a diagram that explains this Route Tracking Window:
Routes assigned to the same Driver or the same Vehicle will track sequentially. The route with the earliest scheduled start time will track first. The next route will start tracking when the first route is Completed.
How Does a Stop Change Statuses When a Route is Tracking?
A route stop’s state has changed. Route stops can have 5 different states:
- Scheduled - Timeframe set for the route
- En Route - Vehicle is on the way to the stop
- Arrived - Vehicle is at the scheduled stop
- Completed - Vehicle has left the scheduled stop
- Skipped - Vehicle did not arrive at the stop
Our system recognizes skipped stops in the following manner:
- A stop will be marked as "skipped" if a driver arrives at a stop out of the planned order. When the route tracking window ends, any stop that hasn’t been completed will be marked as skipped. A driver will be able to go back to a Skipped stop and Arrive/Complete it as long as the route tracking window is still active.
A route will be marked as "arrived" when the vehicle is inside the stop’s geofence for 2 consecutive minutes. The departure of a stop will be recorded when the vehicle leaves the geofence and stays outside the geofence for 30 consecutive seconds.

How do I Configure Route Tracking for my Fleet?
Depending on the type of fleet you have, you may want to amend the default behavior for how Routes track. These configurations can be found by navigating to your Fleet Dashboard Settings > Routes.
